The '68 NYr I had before had manual heat and ac controls. I'm looking at buying another one right now that has auto temp control. I noticed that the levers on either side of the steering column that operate the floor vents are not there. How do you open the vents? Makes me silly having to ask.

A 68 Chrysler C-body with ATC doesn't have a fresh air door on the right side, the ATC control unit is located in that spot. The left side is the same as non-ATC cars.

Thank you.

I've never seen one with ATC in person and I was provided with a picture looking the other way in the interior.

I've had a NYr, a Newort and a Newport Custom and none of the had ATC. Do I want a car that has it or is it a pain in the backside?

Thanks again.

Repairing the ATC can be a challenge, I succeeded in it, if interested you can take a look at my welcome wagon topic http://www.forcbodiesonly.com/mopar-forum/showthread.php?12875-New-member-from-the-Netherlands/page2

If you want it depends on the effort you want to put into it and how important a normal working AC/heating system is to you. The chance the system is working when you buy the car is 0.1% and if this is the kind of job that you like to do it can still be a brainteaser. The availability of parts is low, a lot is regulated with vacuum and therefore a bit more difficult to find the failure.
There's a lot of information on the Imperial website http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Air/index.htm including the Master Technician Service Conferences on ATC. Also the experiences of other owners is documented including some repair tips and work a rounds.

I would say if it's your dream car go for it, if it's likely you will run into another good deal let this one slide.

And of course there's you-tube

My 78 NYB was ordered with auto temp 2... luckily it must of **** the bed before I got and it was converted over. It works fine now, but I can see the issues of old nylon/plastic bits becoming old and brittle and leaking vacuum, not only causing the ac system to malfunction, but also drivability issues as well. Same problem we have with the nylon pieces on the wiper system. The plastic from that era just didn't hold up to the test of time. I'm still looking for a 73 Imperial and I wouldn't turn one away just because it has auto temp. They pretty much all came with it back in the day. Just have to deal with it like any other gremlin

Guys,
Thanks for the replies. This car is currently listed on ebay & Craigslist and I think I may pass on it. I've found another one that I'm going to check into. If it has AC I'd prefer it to be the normal set up. I don't mind chasing challenging issues, but I sure do prefer to drive.
