I was a little surprised at Leno's comment about it not being a fast car, you can't expect blistering acceleration from a 4000lb car with a 3:23 rear axle ratio.

I didn't even hear him get on it..... Iam sure its faster than his steam powered machines that he spends tons of money on, having his own private boiler mechanic tinker on, just so he can go 2 miles down the road and get some waves....... Iam sure it stops better too..........

The car was not tuned up properly, since then it has been and the car will put you in your seat.

This video reminds me what happened in my old hometown one Saturday night obo 25 years ago...

A bunch of guys drove down the main street with their retired '74 CHP Monaco, all lights and sirens functioning. They scared a hell out of lots of people and had a great fun doing so...

Too bad a real police cruiser intercepted them and the car ended up to the local police department's parking lot and the passengers to the jail for the night. :busted:

69 Polara: Still a great looking body style. It's too bad Jay didn't let the cop drive the car. I bet cops would rather drive something like this than an SUV. I'm also surprised that the cops apparently didn't order front disc brakes, although I wasn't completely clear on that from the video.

Spike was a little fuzzy on some of the details, keep in mind that he went through the Academy in 69.

The 69 was the first year that ALL the CHP cars ordered had AC, it does have disc brakes as all the 69's did. In 69 all the cars were ordered the same. I'm pretty sure that as soon as disc brakes became available on the Dodges the CHP jumped on it.

Spike forgot how to operate the electronic siren that was first being tested in 69 (on about 50 cars), he retired in 2004 much had changed.

I'm not sure Ron would have let the officer drive, Jay yes, Spike yes. As it is I have only driven it a few time on the highway, and a few parades.

In talking with the current officers most of them really like the new SUV far better than the Crown Vic, they do admit they didn't like the idea at first but they handle superbly and are more car than SUV. In their initial testing they tried to flip one and could not. They tried with it in FWD mode and in all wheel drive mode and with the stability control off (or disabled).

That's a bit of a surprise. I thought of his cars as being in much better tune than that.

Did you meet Bernard?

The CHP 69 Polara is not one of Jay's cars, it was an invited guest for his show. The car is owned by my friend Ron Hurwitz.

His staff isn't that big and we pretty much met everybody, I'm not good with names with people I don't see regularly.

That explains it!

Bernard Jucli is Jay's engineer. About 5'9" moustache, speaks with a Swiss accent. If you have seen the steam engine episode of Jay's Garage, he's the guy who tinkers with the steam plant. Really nice guy. He also did the engineering and building of Jay's hybrid car a few years back. Jay got most of the press, but the Journal of the Society of Automotive Engineers ran a story on it, and gave proper credit to Bernard.

I know him because I used to race against him. Well, I say "race against" loosely. Not only was his Chevron (B34, I think) faster than our car, he's a way, way better driver.

Every time I see Leno's cars, I think, "wow, Bernard is doing a nice job with that stuff!"

I guess I'm a Police car nerd, as I own 2 (though not C-bodies). I started out as a Fox Chassis Mustang fan in 1980 when I bought a 2.3 Turbo hatch new when I got out of college. I have since owned 12 Fox Chassis Mustangs and presently have 4, of which 2 are ex-patrol cars. I own the last of 20 consecutive vin Minnesota State Patrol 1989 SSP Mustangs and 1 of 8 1993 Nevada Highway Patrol SSP Mustangs. I know this is a C-Body site so I will include a photo of a 1970 Fury Minnesota State Patrol and one of my 1970 Custom Suburban station wagon.

Do you know if civilians could order a police package car and get the PK VIN in 1969?
