Your 18 in boot camp 5 days from your mother and get guard duty for your barracks. At 03:15 a major and 2 AP's show up at the door. They politely ask you to open the door. You resist for 30 secs. You were instructed to not open the door. You learn your first most important lesson. Always obey orders. Talk about feeling low.

Being in the military is a unique experience.

You totally lost me on the moral of the story.

Tink was assigned guard duty with instructions to not open the door.
After 30 seconds, he did.
Tink then says the moral of the story is: "Always obey orders".

So, it wasn't the Major?

Sorry guys. It made sense to me when I typed it. I was reflecting about the time I guarded a barracks in boot camp and the occupants were restricted to their bunks. The attitude barrack. Lots of drafted from big cities. The military was interesting.
