Headlight motor

Does anyone know why my headlight doors open but won’t close ? But if I manually close them with the thumb wheel on the bottom of the motor when I get to the very end the motor kicks in and starts knocking because now the doors are closed.

Often, the doors will open but not close if there's a bad bulb.

Yea, sounds funny, but the ground for the relay flows through the bulb filaments.

Same thing if you have some odd LED lights or a headlight relay system. No ground return through them.

Definitely could be a ground issue as @Big_John stated.

In my case, the limit switch inside the motor stopped working which lead to the plastic gear getting stripped because the motor kept trying to close the doors after they were closed, which sounded like knocking inside the motor.

If you can confirm the grounds are good it might be worth taking a look inside the motor for anything obvious like a bent limit switch or broken plastic gear.

I repaired mine with a gear kit from I believe ebay and it has worked correctly since.

In my first post of the thread below you can see the brass contacts of the "limit switch" that basically tell the motor to stop running when the doors open and close. I was able to bend these back to a working position and resolve the issue with new plastic gears.
