How's it going? My name is Jason, from North Iowa. I bought a 1967 Newport last summer and hoping to fix it up a little. Hopefully I came to right place for advise.

Rear wheel drive and carburetors are a whole new thing to me now...but I've wanted an old car like this ever since I was 15 years old. I'm 33 now and I figure, what the heck. I've been messing with Hondas for a while so I know how to use a wrench but I think I'm gonna need some help with this Newport.

I went down to Topeka, KS to pick it up...what a long drive there and back. Ran out of gas on the way down in my GF's car and on the way back the power steering went out in the Newport.

It's a base model with 383 and 2 barrel carb. Single exhaust. AC (not working). AM radio (not working). 33,000 on the odometer and the previous owner was pretty sure that's true, I doubt him though. Speedo is incorrect, says 70 when im going 50 and the fuel gauge has only ever reached the halfway mark.

The body is kind of rough but doesn't bother me. It does have hail damage though too, and I would like that fixed somehow, I've heard that it's very difficult on these old cars. The only other thing to the outer appearance I want to change is a set of Pacer Supremes with a fat white wall.

But for now I really just want it to be reliable but also a little more power would be fun. For some reason the teenager in me wants to do sweet burnouts. As I said earlier, I drive Hondas, so I've never gone through that burnout phase.

Aside from all that, I enjoy my Accord very much as well as playing guitar and writing songs, writing jokes, playing video games. Fixing and repairing just about anything. Household projects and tinkering with electronics...

My day job consists of mobile electronic installations, mostly police cars. And I'd hate to say it, but the new Ford Sedan Interceptor beats the Charger IMO. newport1.jpgnewport3.jpg2013-06-23_09-55-43_474(1).jpg

Theres an old school trick for the hail damage...Talk to a real body guy but apparently you can gently heat up the dimple and itll pop all on its own. Saw this on TV so no promises, they said it works because of the thicker steel on old cars. Bitchin' car BTW

Welcome aboard you came to the right place. These guys have taught me tons about my car, I was a c-bodies newbie not that long ago, now I can even pass on some advice. I like the car.

Great looking car, welcome to the site from the Motor City!
have you figured out what happened to the power steering? A four barrel carb and intake would be a good upgrade for you to get a little more power to the road but I'd do a health inspection on the 383 before making that commitment. Those have a grille that's in my top 5 favorites on the big Chryslers. Get yourself a factory service manual for that car, a hard copy is nice but you can get them on DVD and print pages off as you need them out in the garage. Let's see the interior and underhood. It has a nice stance to it as is, however it looks to be lower than stock. Is there a fender tag under the hood on the driver's side inner fender well?

Yeah, that is a decent and solid looking car you have. I agree with Detmatt with the upgrades, but I'd also throw in a hotter cam if your willing to do that. It would work nicely with the performance carb and intake. The cam is the "brains" of the motor you could say....but as Detmatt also said try to ascertain the status of the motor first.....compression test would be a good way to find out.

I bought a service manual on ebay already. Still working out the bugs with the p/s. I just need to get a decent bracket to keep it from wobblying around. Interior is very clean, couple shades of blue, only problems are the headliner isnt hung on the C pillars and there is black duct tape across the front seat where your back would rest. The body looks like 130k miles while the interior looks like 30k which I why i cant decide for certain what the true mileage is. Ill have to take some pics of the interior unless i can find one from the ebay auction.

I'd like to install dual exhaust, then maybe ill try and tackle intake and carb. I called Jegs or maybe it was Summit a while back to see what it would take. The tech listed off about a dozen parts to do it and I have no idea what he was talking about. I would have to get a hold of a step by step process and have actual part numbers since all four barrel carbs look the same to me, plus I have no idea how to tune one. I would need something simple that I can slap on I guess, lol. I can turn a wrench but I dont have much knowledge on old cars.

The previous owner said he put some lowering blocks in it. I still have yet to get underneath it though. Plus I am still trying to find a decent mechanic that I can trust. I never needed one before with my Honda. newportseats.jpgnewportengine.jpg

Welcome! Where in Iowa are you? My in-laws are in Southwest Iowa about equidistant from Des Moines, Kansas City and Omaha. We go up for 4th of July every summer. My father in-law has a pretty nice collection of cars and we get them all out and drive them in the parade on the 4th. Lots of fun.

I'm from the Mason City area. Every August the local car club has a cruise around Clear Lake...it lasts about 2-3 hours and beats any local parade in my opinion.

Nice looking interior! Keep us up to date with your progress.
