Ma.
I have a 63 Newport if the car is in neutral and not running rear wheels are free and car will roll. If I start the car left rear wheel locks and car will not move. All this happens without touching the brake. car will not move forward or reverse when running, right rear spins, left rear locks. Shut the car off and left rear spins freely. Any suggestions. Thanks Ern

clutchs in tranny are welded tighter than a nuns you no what. how long has this been happening.high gear and reverse clutches are the problem.

If its not a brake issue your going to have to pull that rear end apart as something is wrong with the diff.... my guess is if its an open gear that the spider gears are binding/broken/wrecked due to a severely worn cross pin or perhaps the pinion bolt has loosened and the pinion gear is sliding back and forth binding the ring gear.... (in neutral under no power to the pinion the pinion or spider gears could center itself and allow the axles to roll again... in in any event that diff must be gone through for damage.

Others can chime in an perhaps add or discount my opinion tho

EDIT: Oh one wheel DOES turn and one locks... spider gear(s) then (assuming you have completely ruled out the brake but just ensure that wheel bearing is not so severely worn/wrecked that power to the wheel does not CAUSE the brake to bind)

even if this is in neutral it will not roll when car is running, but will when you shut the car off? Sound like rearend but why when in neutral running will right be free and left lockup. When in neutral running shouldn't be any type of pressure from tranny to rear? Put it in drive or reverse left locks up right spins

That is weird. Let us know what you find. Good luck.

Like rumpfox said its in the rear, the cross pin is walking back and forth, binding the spiders up. Pull it weld the cross pin in place in its relaxed state it should work fine and then start looking for a new center section.

pull the drive shaft and see if the problem stops then you know were to start looking. my money's the tranny is coput
