Hurricane Harvey

Sad to see so much destruction. It is also clear why basements can be a double edged sword. Great when there is a tornado but not so good in a flood.

Here's the problem with Harvey. Its stuck as they say, but why?

High pressure on two sides has it boxed in. They (forecasters) knew this a week ago that, soaked with Gulf moisture, this thing was gonna park itself RIGHT where it did.

See those little yellow arrows? Those airflows are spinnin' Harvey like a top .. right where it is, the Gulf feeding it water, and its pouring down on the land. Yikes.

Yeah, weather people are maligned .. but that's only because ordinary folks UNDER-appreciate the science of meteorology. That's another subject for another thread, but we expect government officials to know what's what.

The evacuation plans tho for Harvey .. the "shelter-in-place' vs. the GTFO orders? I dunno ...

We can Monday morning quarterback those officials now, but I am sure they didn't want anyone to get hurt/die. But the forecast was statistically compelling -- a WEEK ago -- on this flooding thing.:(

followuo on my post #22.

i heard a FEMA guy on NPR explaining the "shelter-in-place' logic as he demurred to local officials to explain their specific teasons.

aside from fact that Houston is big and its takes a lotta time to evacuate, he said they never know what exact route the water runoff will take as it all empties in the Gulf.

so who do you tell to leave? the presumption is you will unecessarily evacuate, just as likely as you say stay in place, and both cases you're wrong.

evacuations arent without risks either to people and properties they abandon ... 'cry wolf" operations really upset people.

then you prepare for inevitable water rescues wherever they occur he said. low-lying areas for sure ..but where else? apparently thats hard to know in advance until you see the other paths the runoff wants to take.

anyway made sense to me.

Been getting pictures from my brother living in Houston and it don't look good. When he bought his property he studied flood maps and narrowed his property selection to those above the 500 year flood lines. Most people are happy with 100 year flood lines, but he's another engineer so I know how he thinks. Anyway, Sunday the 500 year flood level was reached and he figures another 3' until the house gets it. The boys on CNN are talking 1000 year flood levels, but who knows what they are since flood maps barely cover 500 year levels. Hard to imagine that amount of water. Couple of years ago my brother built a dock and a gazebo on the edge of a small duck pond at the far rear of his property. The roof peak of the gazebo is about 15' above the level of the pond water.
Not so much now.

The forecast is 36" more rain.

I agree Jeff but put yourself in their shoes, it would be hard to leave your castle but I will say that the powers that be should have put mandatory evacuations in place for a lot more areas.
The problem with waiting for that, your waiting for the government to decide if you're safe. Once they recommend you evacuate on the news... you need to be aware of what's potentially coming and how well your location can withstand that possibility. IDK the areas in question very well, the couple times I was in Houston I saw how quickly some roads flooded...

If you get stranded in your neighborhood when 10 inches fall and the new tells you 30+ is on it's way... I think it's foolish to stay put. I'm no expert, but I believe that accounts for at least a third of what the rescue workers are dealing with.

Some things, like this, are hard to justify in my mind...

To me that is criminal neglect that caused these folks to go through this. Management of the home should have made plans to protect these folks and evacuated them early... They will blame the government for not forcing them to act in the best interest of their clients.

I don't even know exactly what everybody was told before the storm hit and now all the news outlets have got it so....

Just got this bit of great news, my Fury's twin sister managed to survive Harvey without any damage.
