Eric Bolling (Fox Business Channel's Follow the Money) test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors.

For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine.

Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery. So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles. It will take you 4 1/2 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. In a typical road trip your average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.

According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery.

The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I looked up what I pay for electricity.

I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh.

16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.

$18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery.

Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine only that gets 32 mpg.

$3.19 per gallon divided by 32 mpg = $0.10 per mile.

The gasoline powered car costs about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000.

I can't stomach how Obama has been successful into ramming this bs down American's throats . He may pose as a liberal but he's really a puppet for Big Business lobbiests who fill his coffers. Now they are really going to put the pressure on in the next four years to get paid back.

Stan......ALL politicians are puppets.... It's the nature of the position. We just get to operate the short strings.
At least we got the better of the two puppets.

We did? .....i dont think so

I saw a few of those stranded on the side of road when I drove through the blizzard from Green Bay to Maryland on 26 Dec 12. I would of been very worried that anything that would of slid into the Volt would of killed everyone inside. No thanks, I wouldn't want one.

I went to (read was Forced to go to, Apprenticeship program sent me) a Presentation by GM about the Chevrolet Volt, he went into his speal and when it came time for questions I asked him about viability, maintenance and re-sale value, He could not give me accurate answers and simply danced around the subjects, I even challenged him to compare the Volt to a Compact or Sub compact Chevrolet, something like the Aveo or Spark, in the end the Aveo would be worth more and would have cost less and really not have put too many more emissions out than the engine the Volt has.

Nick

And yes the Volt has both the Batteries and a Gasoline motor.

Edit: I realise that as a Apprentice Class A: AST I will most likely end up having to go back and take a course on Hybrids and Electric Vehicles.

Either you are getting a royal screwing or you have incorrectly calculated your electricity costs. Our prices are between 8.2 and 11.3 cents/kwh. I suspect you are actually paying $0.116/kwh.
