After thinking the last 25 years that my Grandpas 65 Fury III was gone after he gave it to my uncle, it came back to me through my mom. I plan to swap a 383 in but otherwise keep mostly stock.
Nope nothing wrong with it that I know, it’s a project for my sons and I. We’ll rebuild the 383 and tranny and then do the poly, that way the both get a rebuild and the car will stay driveable.Nice car, I like 'em scruffy. Is there anything wrong with the Poly?
I'm just starting to appreciate the Poly's, good to see it will get a new life.Nope nothing wrong with it that I know, it’s a project for my sons and I. We’ll rebuild the 383 and tranny and then do the poly, that way the both get a rebuild and the car will stay driveable.
Wasn't the driveshaft mounting different, like on the Dodges?I believe that '65 was the last year for the drum parking brake on the rear of the transmission? Rather than at the rear wheels, as the '66s were. That was what I was referring to as "differences". The 383 will need a stronger trans than what's behind the 318, usually.

It runs and drives. I need to do the lower radiator hose, u joints, and the gas tank rubber tube-it leaks. My uncle put the Weiand intake and Edelbrock 4 barrel on it. As for the 383, it was the next engine up from the 318 in 65 and from what I can gather from the 65 parts book the motor mounts and tranny mount are the same. I may be wrong and would love to be pointed in the right direction if that’s the caseIt'll be a neat project. Nice colors.
There are a good many mechanical differences in the '65s and later Furys. So the 383 swap might need more to make it all work than you might suspect. Just an advisory.
Back in the later '60s and early '70s, our service station guy had a few '65 Fury IIIs. All were 318 2bbl Polys. They just kept on running! He made many trips from the DFW area to the South Plains of TX in them. Other than normal maintenance items, he'd run the valves every so often. Good running engines, for sure.
When I finally saw a bare short block of an earlier 301, I was amazed at how much more meat those main webs had than a Chevy 350 had. A very stout bottom-end on the old Poly V-8s.
I, too, wonder what's wrong with the 318? By the same token, what's been done to it?
Glad it's back "in the family". It'll be a nice looking car when it's cleaned up a bit. You'll probably hear "Don't see any of them anymore" at car cruises.
Enjoy!

I have a 383 and 727 to rebuild that were pulled from the same car. The 727 that’s in it now was rebuilt about a year ago.I believe that '65 was the last year for the drum parking brake on the rear of the transmission? Thanks for the guidance. I will double check the wiring harness, stub frame and the parking brake.Yes, the 383 was the next-larger engine in those cars, from the factory. The mounts might be the same part number themselves (318 and 383), but is what the mounts bolt to the same part numbers? As in stub frame brackets and such?
Be sure to scope out how the engine wiring harness might be different on the Poly and the B engines, too. If you have the '65 Parts Book, check out the parking brake system, too.
Enjoy!

Yep, I’m driving it as is and will upgrade to power disc brakes on the front. The engine upgrade is the last thing I plan to do. Actually mechanically it’s sound, the biggest project is the interior. It only has 77000 miles on it, and my grandpa got it from the original owner. My advice for what its worth, is to keep the poly for now. Its a running car. Sort out all the other mechanical issues, brakes, steering, exhaust, trans, lights etc. Chip away at it. That way the kids can drive it if they're of age, and build some excitement behind it. It would also be a good idea to change the brakes to a dual master cylinder, maybe even power, then work on the engine upgrade.
That will be a lot of motor in that car to be stopping with a singe master, if that things fails... you're or your kids could be toast.
Good Luck, it looks like it has good bones for a nice family project.
I know the poly tranny doesn’t work and have a 383 and trans that we’re pulled from the same car.65's did not have the tail shaft mounted parking brake. 1965 was the last year for the 'cable shift' type of transmissions. If you have a 66-up transmission, you can likely use the shift linkage from a 66 Fury, otherwise you will need a big block 727 with the cable shift configuration. The auto behind the poly 318 will not work with a big block.
I thought '62 or '63 was the last year for the trans brake. '64 had the dash mounted park lever. '65 was the first year for column mounted auto's. Thought the parking pawl/lever eliminated the trans brake completely. Then again I might be completely wrong!I believe that '65 was the last year for the drum parking brake on the rear of the transmission? Rather than at the rear wheels, as the '66s were.
