Hi Gang, Does anyone know what new size tires will replace the original L84-15's that the owners handbook states came on my 73 Imperial LeBaron? My Speedo is off by 6 mph. When it reads 71 actually doing 65 etc. I'm tired of doing the math! LOL

Right now there are 235-75 R15's on it. Are there any other options or will I have to change the gear in the trans?

Thanks

the L84 tires were standart on the Imperial

check it out:

73-Imperial_0010.jpg

The L84 part converts to about a 235/80 tire meaning that the sidewall on such a tire is about 12mm (about 1/2in) taller than a 235/75 series tire. Only problem is, I don't think there are any 235/80 x 15in tires around?

Never heard of that size. I've heard of "78" series and "80" series tires, but not "84" series.

Well I'm not crazy... that's what is in the owners manual and the FSM state... I'm just trying to get the right size so my speedometer works right. Plum crazy even posted the factory sales literature on it. Just all the old timers that used to know how to interchange those oddball numbers have hung it up I guess.
Reckon I'll just go with the 235's and work on the speedometer gears in the trans

The only thing the tires have effect on speedometers is the O.D. Doesn't matter width, ratio, color, etc...
Google:
1. A tire size chart that shows equivalent sizes. Convert your pre-historic size to the modern equivalent.

2. A tire size calculator that calculates the diameter of the modern equivalent.

Might take a whole five minutes....

From turbinecar.com

The chart below is for conversion of one type of size series with original inch sizes from the 60's and 70's. This is for as close to a direct replacement for each size but is not endorsed by any safety group or manufacturer of tires or automobiles. You should always use the proper size tire but when an older car size is no longer produced, this might help. Please consult your tire dealer before you make any decisions if you are in doubt as to if you should use a certain size tire.

Here is another chart that may be easier to read - they are not exactly the same so use this as a starting point.

Note: Every size tire is not listed and many size comparisons are approximate, based on load ratings. Wider tires than those supplied new with the vehicle, should always be checked for clearance.

Vintage Tire Size Conversion Chart
Use the following chart to figure out the closest modern tire size to your car's original tires. Keep in mind these are close approximations and may not be exact replacements. Before purchasing any tires you should compare outside diameters and the tread footprint to get a better idea on how close a match they are. Your local tire dealer should have this information. Variations in tire diameter will have an effect on speedometer accuracy while the tread footprint will have an aesthetic affect on the appearance of the car. The best way to ensure a 100% correct look for your antique car is to buy reproduction vintage tires in the originally recommended size.

Rim/Wheel Widths
Each tire has a specific rim width range on which the tire can be mounted. Failure to follow rim width recommendations may result in poor tire performance or possible wheel and/or tire failure.
Below is a quick reference chart listing each tire size and the acceptable rim widths for that size. (The chart does not show all sizes, but gives a good example) Choosing a wheel near the middle of the range will give a balance between ride quality and handling. A wider wheel will improve handling at the expense of ride quality, while a narrower wheel will improve ride quality at the expense of handling. Consider these compromises when selecting wheels.

Problem is no one ever heard of or recorded the equivalent to L84-15's
Step 1. Google "L84-15"
This chart immediately pops up....

pSNfXfU.jpg

Step 2. Take equivalent size and calculate diameter...

APhd4Tj.jpg

Step 3. Unfortunately, that size is a truck size so you are not going to find a WW. This forces you to get as close as possible to a passenger car size as close as possible in a WW which would be 235/75R15. That size in a WW is easily available from at least 3 manufacturers that I can think of off the top of my head.

Step 4. Find diameter of a 235R75-15. Googling provides this chart...
HVT0adO.jpg

28.9" or a 3.5% difference.

Step 5. Do the math...

THq0Nm4.jpg

So, when your speedometer is reading 60 mph, your actual speed is 62.1 mph.

Step 7. To correct this error, Google "Mopar speedometer gear chart...

attachment.php

Step 8. Select the correct gear for a 29" tire for your rear end ratio, buy one on ebay, and swap out your speedometer gears in your tranny. That takes 15 minutes.

Wow!!!...

I would use 255/70R15...on a 15X8 wheel...

That is just about as close as you can get with modern tires...

Wow...That has to be the biggest single post ever on FCBO.

Nice tire information!

I just plug in the GPS to the cigarette lighter and I have instant correct speed on the GPS.
