Installed new turn signal plate and wiring, stays on but doesn't turn off, should it?

68 Newport. I installed a new wiring harness and turn signal plate last week. My problem was I had to hold the turn signal on or off, it wouldn't stay on. I ended up breaking the cam even further and had to replace the entire assembly. So now with my new plate it stays on when I turn either direction off but it won't auto turn off when I finish the turn. Should it auto turn off after once I straighten the wheel back? I wen through this much effort so far, might as well get it right.

Where did you get your "new" switch? The generic auto parts store version is so close, but no cigar! Sometimes they can be tweaked to work, often they snap when trying to make work. I'm interested if anyone has a fix other than NOS?

Oh, that's the tilt/tele set up right? I was thinking of the standard beige ones, looks pretty much the same without the full collar. If you got it from a Mopar vendor it should work? Do they offer any customer support? Hopefully someone else with more experience will chime in. I seem to recall this being NOS only repair for some reason.

Do you still have the old one? Could be a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

No tilt or telescope. It's the Saginaw, no tilt no telescope, no side market lights. I got it on eBay, I didn't ask for support so not sure about that.

Old one needed replacing, no doubt. I made sure if that accidentally.

On the steering wheel there should be a tab that is a spring wrapped around the end of the wheel .
It touches the cams to cancel the signal.
Is it still on the wheel?

I have a custom steering wheel I put on. I have the original and that spring, but it's not on. I wonder if I can use that spring with the new steering wheel

Well there you have it, I never realized that was that springs purpose. Chances of the original spring fitting the new wheel are low, however if you measure from the spindle, and clock it correctly, and can drill the new wheel to accept a roll pin, and install the roll pin to the exact depth, that could work. Or put the old wheel back on.

With that being said, also make sure that you didn't install it to deep where the cancel tab works it magic. I had to stuff a piece of cardboard under the unit to shim it up for the cancel to work. Good Luck

Ok. Good information. Ive had the steering wheel off enough lately I'm sure I'll have it off again shortly and can check

Custom steering wheel....figures. Was not aware of that and may be the culprit.
Keep at it. At least the lights work properly... I hope.

Everything works fine except the auto turn off. I can live without it, was just curious general operation. I love the steering wheel no matter what anyone says.
