I've started cleaning up the firewall and under belly using the 3M rust & paint removing wheels which last about 5 minutes each.

At $10 a pop here at the local outlet, that is a bit on the expensive side of things.

These things do a great job at removing the crusties & surface rust but...

Does anyone have something else I can use to help the process along?

Get a good 5" angle grinder with a cup brush like this...

On customers cars I send everything to be either sand blasted or media blasted. The time it takes to fart around with grinding, stripping or paint stripper makes blasting more cost effective. Does a much better job too especially on rust and undercoating.

I did think of using a sand blaster but the sand will get everywhere which is not a fun thing...

At least I can control the dust field to a certain extent with the 3M wheels.

I will try the cup brush though.

Thanks for the replies!

The chinese version at harbor freight. Mine did the entire passenger rear quarter of my monaco, cleaned a crap load of mill scale off of about 32 feet of square tubing, and some other projects before I deemed it too far gone to continue its use.
