Is this amount of play in the steering box normal?

please watch my 6 second video of me wiggling the steering box input shaft on the 68 Newport and let me know your opinion



it seems like a lot of slop to me. but I went over to the 68 New Yorker and wiggled that one and it's about the same. Though that don't mean anything because they both could be worn or out of adjustment.

oops, a pic of the clutch and flywheel got attached to the thread too. I was going to post a thread asking if they still looked usable but changed my mind because I don't think it'd make sense putting it all back together with a clutch of questionable condition. But since it's here, feel free to comment on it. Maybe it's totally fine...

Advice of an Old Man, If the Clutch looks At All Suspect replace it & do the Job properly.
Unless you enjoy Busting Knuckles & Sweating your Butt off under a Car do the Job while it's All out on the Floor.
So much Simpler & Easier, Nothing Worse or more Annoying than having to do the same job Twice.
As for the Steering Slop try starting the Engine, Most of the Play in P/S disappears when it's Powered Up.

I had the same concern about mine. Once the engine starts, all that goes away. The slightest movement in the steering wheel will make the front wheels move. (If all the steering links under the car aren't worn out).

Yeah that's what I figured too

Yep, I'll start that right up....oops, wait there's no engine in the car! hehe, sorry i couldn't resist.

But yes, that's what my Brother told me too, just wanted some extra confirmation. Thanks
 
I have about the same amount of play (play in the steering - I have not checked/looked at the box). Am told it is normal for a torsion bar suspension
 
Normal when engine is off. Mine with my rebuilt steering gear is about the same with the engine off.
 
What I saw was on the on or at the maximum lash limit. Small adjustments can be made with cross shaft lash adjustment. Large adjustments beyond 1 one turn indicate excessive internal wear. Also check the coupler wear. Easily missed.
