It might have been this instead of the Pentastar

The "C" in a square was a rejected corporate logo from the 1963 competition that eventually chose the Pentastar. (Some unsuccessful logos were shown in an internal newspaper many years ago.) It was seen as too "GM" like. At least they got some use from it; early-production 1979 New Yorkers. By the end of the year, it was all-Penastars, all the time until the blue-ribbon returned in 1995.

It's shown here in a photo I just clipped from a FB NY'er fan page. These were actually color-keyed to the car. (Another reason it probably got dumped mid-year.) They fascinated me as a kid, but I can say that I never stole one.

That's very cool, do you have any pics of the other entries? I did a short search and found info about the contest and the pentastar but no images of the other entries.

Unfortunately no. I can only remember that one, and another that was basically a hexagon. They only showed maybe 3-4 of the rejected ideas. I'd love to see them all. If I was in charge of the Historic Archives, you guys would get to see a lot of cool chit.

Didn't I read someplace that the guy who used to be in charge of the archives retired and was never replaced?

No... the only unusual thing was that he was replaced by his son. Which is not what usually happens in a big company... at least not that obvious. But that was many (at least 15) years ago.

GM had their "GM Mark of Excellence" sticker that was on the driver's side door frame. When I saw that on my uncle's 'new 67 Pontiac Executive sedan, I almost laughed/ "GM, Excellence?" Thought I remembered that '79 New Yorker hood ornament.

Thanks,

You brought it up Carmine or i'd have left it buried. They call that Nepotism as I'm sure you are aware of My Friend. It was pretty obvious wasn't it? lol, Father was a designer in that department in the mid late '60s and retired in the mid-'80s. He got the credit and the praise for the '68 Charger tail lights among other accolades. the son got his foot in the door thru' the Chrysler Museum. the father, Ken M., (who's name you've probably heard before) and many more if us were all 300 letter car club members and good friends in those years. Never cared much for the son and I'll let it go at that, but when the opening presented itself at Chrysler Historical the kid already had his foot in the Corporation(kinda) and didn't even blink. Stay Well Carmine in these crazy times. Don't know if you knew Larry Rathgeb but covid19 took him out a couple months back? He jumped into Ronnie Householders position in Engine Development when Ronnie was diagnosed with Cancer back in '71 and he knew he was't going to beat it (I kinda remember), Jer
