Yes, we have seen this before but a friend in the car biz alerted me he thinks they are all "serious now".

Today's Detroit Free Press has a story - http://www.freep.com/story/money/ca...ars-small-engines-changing-industry/25518779/ - but here's the upshot in this chart:

Progress..I get it, I'm into it. My oldest kid is 28 years old and has NEVER touched a typewriter. She of course knows what they were but never used one.

The day when no more factory V8's are produced may actually be in my lifetime. I'll bet there's a V6-powered Vette or Viper "mule" running around the proving grounds as I write this.

One of my well-heeled auto dealer buddies has a Tesla. I gotta begrudgingly admit...that friggin' thing will pin your ears back. Accelerates like a rocket sled (we all know why..but y'all get my point I think - technology marches on).

So is the end of the factory installed V8 in light cars and trucks near?

All the more reason for me to buy more old cars and trucks. Really.

The V8 was DOA in 1976 for the 1984 model year...I remember reading that back in '76 in one of the hot rod mags of the day. I used to have that issue until a tornado destroyed my 30-year collection a few years back.

I never believed any previous prediction about the demise of the V8...but this trend seems different.

The politics, technology, regulations etc. in this country and whats coming out of US factories today tells me it really over this time.

The 2020 cars/light trucks are on the drawing board. if you have friends in the industry -- engineers/product planners -- ask them what they are working on.

anyway guess we'll see.

its the "Trend". Inescapable.

Yep writers want headlines and they use ways to get us to look. But i don't much care about what they write as much as the reliability of the data they used to form the argument/assertion.

nice words, but crappy data, equals a BS story to me. crappy words but good data, and i can write the story for myself

so just looking at the numbers, and listening to to guys/gals (who I used to work with) working on the 2025 models, and test-driving an Eco-Boost V6 in an aluminum F-150 truck...the V8's days as an OEM installed piece might truly be numbered. :icon_pirat:

Don't know how many of you knew this but you can order a race ready Body in White Camaro from Chevrolet. Comes without a Serial Number.
Just like the 60's

I read the demise of Camaro will be happening soon too?

Actualy with the 2025 (?) gas mileage requirements, the gum'mint is going to make the purchase of a vehicle with an I.C. engine possible only to Arab Shieks...

i dont think factory-installed IC's are going anywhere for as long as any of us (over 40 years old) are still around to drive them -- absent a pure electric (no hybrids) car that can go 500+ miles on a charge, recharge in 10 minutes or something groundbreaking like that.

in the meantime the data says the powertrain substitutions are coming out of the V8's--today's neck-snapping Hemi's notwithstanding. guess we'll lets see what's in the "super-cars" a 5-10 years from now.

I am looking forward to the day when our second car is electric. The parts, system, and fluid reduction will be welcome, plus not having to stop at a convenience, oxymoron store for gas will be priceless.
