I agree Stan, but those years are past and things and times have changed. Unions are greedy, the guys running them are greedy with their hands are in the pockets of the companies or groups they are supposed to be against. Its all about politics and corruption with Unions these days and thats it........

Unions have their problems no doubt but even non union workers benifit from unions. If Unions were banned companies would take full advantage of it and reduce wages and benifits for all. Within a few years Unions would be needed again just like in the 1920's.

Look what Harley-Davidson did to the union a year or so ago. Threathened to move to another state if they concede wages and benefits. That was the leverage for corporate. The union had it's faults too.

How so?

I sincerely wish I hadn't opened this Pandora's box when I was simply trying to inject a little humor. That will teach me...

Hey! No Jerry Lewis this year. WOOHOO!

Actually, your not to blame, I am.

My better judgement said to leave "empty chair day" thing alone. It is usually not in my nature to involve myself in these sort of things, but today - for some reason (maybe Clint Eastwood) I just could not help it. Nonetheless, that will be the first and last example of non-automotive commentary from me.

Because a non union company has to at least offer something somewhat close to what union workers get to get good workers. Also company's will offer better wage and benfit packages to discourage workers from organizing. If union wages go down non union company's will follow siut.

Oh, I see. Got it. Thanks.

No, they dont. In todays market there is more people than jobs and many are willing to take what they can, even at a reduced wage.

Unions are why your taxes are so high....In Jersey more so than other States . In Jersey many municipalities, counties, and the State , when they contract a job it must be union. Police, teachers, Fire departments, public works, Trash collections, Clerks offices many are union, with extensive vacation, health and retirement benefits. How can a society pay and support these services by paying them more than the average wage/benefit that society earns?

I was a member of the Teamsters for a few years and also a member of the Carpenters union for over nine years, I have done better out of those unions than in.

However, if I was a member in one of those "good paying , good benefit" unions, I would be happy I was and defend it too.

The problem is a lack of a level international playing field. A NY Times article this past weekend really put the issue in perspective. Example: Walmart contractors are paying textile workers in Bangldesh $37/month. Union activity is severly restricted in that country. Here in NA we are spiralling towards the lowest common denominator. Unions would be well served by doing a better job of making this sort or corporate greed an election issue. Maybe then they can gain back some credibility. My .02.
