Hello everyone, I’ve been leaning on eventually building a new engine and transmission for my 72 Polara, as of recent my a904 is taking its sweet time to go into reverse and sometimes drive. The current engine is a 360 and healthy so I’ll drive it till it can’t. But I have an itch for more. I have this spare 360 with the small block 727 and looking to make somewhere around 450hp for a nice daily and maybe a few passes here and there. Any recommendations for where I should start reading into? I’d say the builder books but I’d love to hear your opinions.

A fluid and filter change and band adjustments for your transmission might straighten up its behavior.

I'm a no replacement for displacement kind of guy, especially for a heavy car. Bottom end torque is what you need and to get 450 hp out of a 360 is going to require a cam that moves the rpm range higher than you might like.

I would start with a 4 barrel and dual 2.5" exhaust with a 3.23 axle ratio. A performance advance curve in the distributor and maybe advance the stock cam 4 degrees.

That should wake it up a bunch and not break the bank to do it.

Today, in modern times, we have become a bit numb to all of the Hellcat power figures, it seems. FEW people realize what it took to make 400 horsepower when your car was newer, much less now. Additionally, with a heavier car (usually considered to be over 3500lbs, as I recall), with a "street/highway" gear (as the 3.23 is), it takes TORQUE to get the car off the line quickly. Something else that a modern car easily does with a 4.70-type low gear in the 8-spd automatic transmission, vs the TFs 2.45 low gear.

All of those big power number engines everybody seems to desire to build these days, as modest in power as they might be in comparison to the Hellcats, can be "not much fun" to drive on the street as all of that big power only happens near 5500rpm. Not an rpm range normally seen on a street car, by observation.

In general, though, aim for a cam of similar specs to the 340 LA V8. Then add a modern 650AVS2 and any 4bbl intake you might like, similar to OEM stock (Edelbrock Performer, for example). Then a torque converter with a stall speed just a bit higher than what that 340/275 motor had. Can't forget the Mahle pistons with the "MM" ring sets! That, to me, would be a nice street car and be credible on the strip, if needed.

The narrow rings unlock a good bit of power that friction would otherwise consume.

To go farther, you'll need a stroker rotating assembly, for about 408cid. There is a Nick's Garage video on such a stroker 360 that made 425hp on his dyno, that was in a 'Cuda of one of his customers. Quite impressive with the stock cyl heads!

Just some thoughts and observations,

Hey how’s it going. Like where you’re going (heading ? LoL) with this. I’ve had multiple, well I guess all my big cars 340 powered except my current 69 fury. It’s 318 and will remain a 318. Big part of making a small block car work is unbolting all the extra weight you can and run at least 323’s. Best gear for a small block is 391 but without overdrive it’s now a in town car and hwy driving will be miserable.

360 will always be the 340’s big lazy cousin. I ran a surplus DC 360 crate motor I got from Dennis Mauer in Az all through the 90’s. It ran well with a big 340 cam but even hotted up, LD340 etc etc it revs differently and power is different. This was a high compression 360, 10.2 or 10.5 can’t remember…

I guess my advice is, it will never be as fast as a new honda or Toyota so shoot for good streetable hp and forget about big gotta drive it with two feet to keep it idling in drive hp. A stock 340 or hipo 360 is more than enough to motivate a c body down the road. Super High horse 340/360 will make a good daily driver into a weekend warrior that won’t be as tractable and overheating might also become an issue.

Speaking from experience, I’ve made that mistake…

This is the reason I’m keeping the 318. Modern cars are so quick why even bother trying to compete? 450 - 500 is great with a 4spd and 391 gears but might be disappointing in a big C with auto and 276ers. Not to mention the low vacuum issues. Just my two cents good luck with your plan. I love strong small block c bodies. Had a bunch of them!

Thanks Ed
