For your consideration, a very rare MoPar Convertible from a humble yet significant C-body collection. It’s a matching numbers original and unrestored 1969 Sport Fury Convertible. The car is very unusual and rare because of its “L” code HP engine and the drop top. There were very, very few, a hand full of these cars made.
I have only come across 3 “L” code 440 HP convertibles 30 years of searching for them. This Sport Fury was ordered with Plymouth’s “L” code, High Performance, 440 Super Commando engine with 375 horsepower; white convertible top and matching white bucket seat with console shift interior. It’s a low option car, or “stripper” as some would call it. And it hauls ***!
This Sport Fury is a factory non A/C car. It has basic AM radio group, heavy duty drum brakes, 3:23 non Sure-Grip axle, Heavy Duty front suspension, front tinted windshield, 3-speed wipers and that’s about it. It’s been painted once its lifetime, likely in the late 1980’s. The paint is a close match to the original B5 Blue. The condition of the paint is “driver” condition. There are scrapes, blemishes, and some small dings in the paint. It looks presentable, and I like most of my cars like this, because I can really drive them, still look good/presentable while driving,.....“but not have to worry about the $15K paint job that was just put on”.
The Sport Fury has a brand new “highest quality” top, top pads, felts, well cover, and new GLASS rear window. The top is the factory color and vinyl grain/pattern. The interior, seats and door panels are original. There is a tear on the drivers side lower center section which can be repaired, the rear seat has a split seam on the passengers side and should be replaced. The door panels are in good shape, one seam on the drivers side panel needs to be glued down and except for the speaker holes cut in them ( in the 70’s at some point) they show really well. The carpet is new.
The over all condition of the car is a “driver”. That being said, I have worked on the car enough to get it running and driving well. I did most of the usual stuff,..,rebuilt the carburetor, flushed the radiator, changed the oil, filter etc. replaced thermostat, installed a new master cylinder and wheel cylinders. The break hoses were done by the previous owner. The car runs drives and stops well; I would replace the break shoes next. I have driven the car locally around town, weekend cruising, but I haven’t driven the car on any long trips, and wouldn’t recommend driving it on a long, long road trip without going thru the systems.
The engine starts and runs good, but it’s totally original, it’s never been painted or rebuilt, it doesn’t blow smoke, but I’m sure rebuilding it at some point is in order, until then it could just be driven as a cruiser or dive into a restoration.
The body is very solid, there appears to be some filler in the lower quarter areas, but it’s not at all through to the inner trunk panel. The rockers are solid, this isn’t a “rusty” car, but rear floors have some holes but the metal isn’t “thin”. That’s where the water ends up in a C-body Convertible because of the “drainage”. Only the center section of both rear floors has some rust; previous owner patched it with POR 15 and riveted panel on top. It would not be a difficult repair to do correctly. I just have driven the car occasionally, so I haven’t repaired it yet.
The wheels are 1970 Chrysler Road Wheels, and go with the car. I liked them better than the 69 style Sport Fury caps. I do have a set of NOS 69 Sport Fury hubcaps for a different car, I can sell them to the buyer if that works. The tires are fair tread, and are showing their age; they are fine for cruising but I’d replace them for any distance drives.
This is a super rare MoPar drop top, in good colors with good options. Perfect for restoring or just using as is with up-grades.
A few notes: The electric/hydraulic top works, but the cylinders are leaking. The 727 transmission is a 1970 replacement apparently from another C-Body. The exhaust is fine and in working order, but I would fit it with new mufflers, and some new hangers for a meaner sound. Please call me with any question or concerns about the car. 206 218 5453. Yes! The intake manifold, carburetor, and HP exhaust manifolds are all original to the car and are correctly date coded, as is the radiator, etc. I’m guessing the power steering pump and steering box are original as well. The air cleaner is the correct unsilenced unit for Plymouth HP engines in 1969.
