Took some time today to ride the bike up to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Visited my Dad and Mom who are buried there, but spent more time walking, riding around, and reflecting to just say thanks.
Memorial Day on the Hornet this noon. My father, red jacket silver hair far right, came down on my invitation. He is a WWII Pacific Theater combat veteran under MacArthur.
While down there he told me that he called the only outfit buddy still left alive. Says the two of them spent every day together for 2 years. The guy's wife answered the phone and told him that he had a fall since they last talked and then he needed surgery. Hit his head and needed surgery either to relieve pressure or stop a bleed. Either way my Dad was told he has now lost his long term memory. He didn't recognize my father nor remember anything they did. I could tell my Dad was very greatly affected by this, even though low key, as now there was no connection left to the past for him with others.
I'm so sorry to hear that! I know how devastating that must be to your Dad! I know what real friendship in the military is all about.
My best friend (Mike from the Army) and I have been stationed together since 1984. We were in Augsburg, Germany for 8.5 years and both stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground from 1992 until we both retired. I knew his German wife before he did. He knew my girlfriends and was my best man at last wedding. We both still live in Aberdeen and work at the Proving Ground.
He has my six and I have his six.......to the last bullet!!!
