A bit rough but in working condition. If you need to drill steel to 1 1/4" in a portable manner this is the drill press for you. Up to 1600 pounds of force on the bit when attached to 1" thick steel base. #3 Morse Taper chuck. New this unit was just over $2K. $600 obo. Figure $100 for shipping via truck.

That's a pretty good price from what I've seen.
 
To drill through 1" thick steel plate, what would a 1" diameter drill bit cost for one of those? And would it be carbide?
 
We use them quite a bit on the job, the magnets are strong as hell. You can hang from one when mounted upside down!

Not that expensive, depending of course on quality and country of origin. Google "Silver and Deming" drill. It could be HSS (high speed steel) and not carbide. Drill it 1/4" at a time and it's reasonably easy.

Well, what I'm asking is, which is harder. Carbide or HSS. I'm planning on robbing a bank.

Carbide is harder, but more brittle.

Bank vaults are usually stainless steel over reinforced concrete. Make your tooling choices accordingly.
 
My difficulty has always been when the concrete bit hits the damn rebar. Another $$ bit down the drain.
