Hey guys:
Thought I would update you on the progress of my formal. I'm the guy who bought the 77 Newport in a BAT auction, and drove it back from Alberta Canada to DC. Both the trip and the ensuing period have been interesting to say the least. But she's running well now....and she's a pleasure to drive.
I suspect my Newport had been well taken care of...the body and interior are in remarkable shape. But it was probably a shine and show type of car....and not driven much. If you can believe the POs, the mileage is only 85,000 kilometers.
So I had it thoroughly inspected, as I use it pretty much as a daily driver (I will store it in winter).
Had to replace the upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, transmission mount and seal, oil pan seal, valve cover gaskets, differential seal, removed the Lean Burn (but kept the TQ), put on new shocks, and had her aligned. Changed all the fluids.
She now (more or less) purrs. Gas mileage is lousy, about 9-10 in town. But she's a real pleasure to drive, and I get all kinds of looks.
Nest on the list is to replace the radio/tape deck with a same year radio/tape deck with FM (the one in the car only has AM) and to upgrade the speakers (I think the ones in it are original). The radio, purchased from the guy who specializes in C body parts, is now being restored. Got the correct speakers from Crutchfield.
Thanks to all of you who have helped me with advice.
