I want to know how others find time to work on their cars. I work 5 sometimes 6 days a week. I only have the weekend. I love being married but damn, can you do this, can you do that, we don't spend any time together. Now I know why the guys with beautiful cars are in there 60's and 70's. I would love a full week to just work, I say work, but I enjoy the hell out of it, on my car. Do others have the same problem?:sSig_thanks:

I did but then I got divorced and life is much happier.

My wife is cool with it and likes it, but she'll let me know when she wants me off the car and spending time with her. What I do is get up early in the morning (5am) if I have something I need to get done on the car. She sleeps until about 10, 10:30 on the weekends! Gives me time to mess with the car and then spend some time with the family too. I live in a Townhouse community and I have to be careful what I do that early in the morning. The association is pretty strick with working on cars. I haven't had any issues so far with being reported, but I'm sure ill piss a neighbor off at some point! We are planning on moving next year into a house with a 2 car garage. Then I'll be in my glory,. I'll be able to do what I want, when I want and take my time. It sucks not having a garage, but I get it done!

Of course the old adage "happy wife, happy life" applies, but there is always time for hobbies. It didn't hurt that I sent her and a friend away to Atlantic City for a weekend! Also, I try to get her involved whether it is handing her a crow bar or asking an opinion about how straight a floor pan is before welding. Involvement is the key and even the smallest piece of ownership goes along way. I keep reminding her that when it is done she will enjoy it as much as I will. Right from the beginning I never called it "my" car, that tends to create walls, it's always "The Chrysler". Lastly, patience is key. I only take one or two Saturdays month, but when it is free and clear of obligations I get a lot done.

Some life lessons are more expensive then others.

Fixed....welcome to my generation. (I'm sneaking up on 40...)

LOL!

Yeah, me too.

My present wife is a lot more tolerant of the cars. It does help that, for now anyway, I'm the stay at home parent. Once I get the kids sorted out, and the house straightened up I can run outside and play.

Being a single income family does put a pretty big dent in the budget for parts though... I'll save that rant for another day...

25 and married here...she is pretty cool about me working on it. I think she is just as excited as I am to get it running. anyway, I am taking it slow and just working on it on the weekends and as money allows...

It's an issue I struggle with constantly. My kids are in sports and that takes up about everyday. Add multiple car restoration and general maintenance projects and suddenly your a fleet mechanic. I'm heading into my off season, work wise, so I'll pull off some time but not much. Generally if I can work 6-8 hours a week on my cars I can make some headway. It's really important to have whatever parts, tools, and supplies on hand. I have a lift which helps some. Maybe the secret is to do something each week, even if it's little. Otherwise it takes zero time to get sidelined and discouraged.

Amen to that brother. My wife likes to take the "Newport" out for a spin every now and then on the weekends when its nice out. She likes a change from her RX330 from time to time.

I have two lifts. I should croak any minute. Watch out. You guys need to get your wives working on weekend, at least it works for me.

You seem to have it figured out. :eek:ccasion14:

My wife has a full time job running my kids around so I pretty much get a full time hall pass...... It's not so bad having two daughters. I zig & they zag & we meet back at home base.

I already have my marching orders. Clean the tool mess I made on the back porch, no garage, just carport. Repaint front doors, yadda, yadda yadda. I have to give my wife some of skills. By the way, she is almost as excited about getting the car painted as I am. She is helping me come up with the paint and interior colors, that is, if I want to change it.

Well there you go! She's getting involved. When I leave messes in shared territory, I find I get extra work too. I find more dumb household stuff to do than she can for me tho so no worries there. When we're home and working, she'll come sit in the garage so I don't find something she could be doing. That road goes both ways;) Nobody has the time they wish they did. So when there's time to play cars, I do my best to keep my wife involved in the car hobby too. As a couple, if we aren't both enjoying it, neither of us really will. That's part of how and why she bought her own and how I came to join this community knowing I'd eventually run into some difficulty I'd need guidance with. She doesn't regularly turn her own wrenches but she's usually right there supporting the effort unless she has other things that must be done with that time. We also name our cars so they have a more personal part in our lives instead of just being property. After all, they are more like pets. They need care and maintenance from loving people. It just makes them more, family. I mean, who could fault me for wanting to drive 600 miles west to go pick up BOB, or south for Cinnabun? Or fly out to meet up with Ozzie and get aquainted on the way home? And it catches on, the kids have even taken to naming the lawn and garden equipment....:)

I think its all about finding the right one.
