I was visiting my old friend and parked my Fury on the lawn, 10 feet off the street. As we are sitting inside I see a car stops, a guy getting out and going towards the Fury. He is walking around, taking pictures. I am thinking.. no big deal. Then he sticks his head inside (windows were rolled down) - this is when I lost my patience.
I come out asking if I can help him and he says - is it your puppy? and without waiting for me to answer - I just totaled one like this and was just looking for another one to buy.
I explained the guy that it is not for sale and its my friend`s birthday so I am going back in.
He immediately asks - what`s under the hood, can you pop up the hood? I politely refused and made it clear I am not interested in showing it now, but he starts over again - it might be worth some money, think about it.
I started getting pissed off.. Good thing my friend walked out asking if I am coming back in and the guy left.
What would you folks do?

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. That's one of the first things they teach you in anger management. I hope you're never ordered to attend. I'll admit since the car was parked on private property your reaction was "warranted", But sets a bad tone and could have changed the other guys tone to one not so positive. Seems owning/driving an old car is a beacon for attention, both good and bad.

Nosy guy seems "outta bounds" to me given these facts.

It's situational though ... starts good, stays good. starts good, goes bad. starts bad, stays bad. and so on. Glad this one turned out ok for you :)

Although there was no sign the way the car was parked may have given the impression that it was for sale. I'm a talker and love to talk about my cars, unless I am in the middle of something I can't stall I take the time. I have spent 20 minutes plus at a gas station or in the parking lot of NAPA more than once.

I had a similar situation only a few months ago where the guy wanted to see the Challenger. I stopped him there. He wanted to see in the garage, I told him not a chance, but I was happy when I said it. I have no idea what he was capable of doing so I kept it nice but short.
It all depends on the vibe I get from my first impression

I really like talking cars, but i had impression this guy was not even listening, only showing interest in buying it...

We all have seen that car parked somewhere and everybody says it doesn't hurt to ask, I've knocked on a few doors and got the it's not for sale, some are willing to share others not.

Part of owning a nice old vehicle is the attention it draws. You need to be ready to answer questions, or worse, listen to the "used to have one just like it" rhetoric.
I'll normally just walk off if someone gets to chatty without any actual knowledge to offer, Or, if someone starts getting physical with the vehicle I just stop them with a "please don't touch".
No need to ever get mad at someone just because they are inquisitive. Just get used to it, or drive a prius.

I've stopped and looked at plenty of cars that didn't have for sale signs in them. Admittedly I try to gauge if the owner is interested in talking about it, if not I walk. Admittedly I've got cornered once our twice by someone that makes me a little bit uncomfortable. It can be a little tricky getting away from them.

Will has a great point.

I'm with Dave too if I don't know you your not stepping foot in my garage.

It all depends....

If a stranger is truly interested I'll stop and talk for a few minutes but I'll let them know from the beginning that my car is not for sale...ever...and I'm going to roll in a few minutes.

Should have told him you would sell it, $200,000 ....too much? Well guess we are done thanks.

Happens a lot with a well worn, patina Challenger, everyone starts thinking they are Richard Rawlings or Wayne Carrini, and they just found a great score.

Lot's of good input and I can see things all directions. You were busy, he was being real nosey. When you said he wasn't really listening that tripped something for me because I absolutely hate one way conversations and will end them quickly. in this instance I may have been as irritated as you but I've also had many many more positive experiences.

I would ha e given him the it's not for sale price. if he bites, oops. but then again the not for sale price would make me think twice if someone wanted to pay it.

I get different vibes from different people. If they are pleasant, I'm very pleasant. If they are douche nozzels, I'm a bigger douche nozzle.
If it's a hot young babe, .....
Umm. I don't know. That's never happened... :(
