Not a C Body But a Cool old Ad

When the early intermediate drag cars came out they actually were only available with the pushbutton auto trans,

That is not exactly true. The 61 ram induction and 62 413 Max wedge cars came standard with a column shifted Borg Warner T-85 3 speed trans with a floor shifter avaliable over the counter. A 4 speed came avaliable in 63 but by then the torqueflight auto trans had proven itself as the one to beat.

I remember the "we used to win automatically" sales ads. I think they were used to introduce the new for 63 4 speed trans.

I was thinking of the beginning of the Max Wedge years 62-63, this three speed thing completely passed by my attention. The few allegedly original ones I remember being featured in mags were all automatics I think.

I have little experience but doesn't it make sense that you need to shift a 727 manually to hit the torque curve sweet spot at the right rpm?

I only know from contemporary tests of Euro cars of the day and these were partly tested by licensed touring car racers, they rarely bested the times of regular full acceleration in Drive and if it was a fraction of a second. So in some cases and only with a very skilled driver it was possible from what I know of our run-of-the-mill higher perf. Euro cars.

Let me put it this way. Even the Hemi Wing cars were sitting on the lots a year later for below dealer's cost...
They weren't Chevy SS396's...

You can't compare Wing cars esp Hemi wing cars with 69 RR's. The wing cars did have a sales problem and were forced on dealers and the public and there was no demand. The 69 383 RR was the Motor Trend car of the year and I really have a hard time believing they had real trouble selling them and the dealer that had 50 in stock was doing a bulk deal to make a little on a lot of them and stir up visits to the dealership ... and he may have only had one or two at $2,599 and the rest w/ more options listed higher.
