I am considering going with the Melling high volume oil pump in my 440 mainly because it is almost ten bucks cheaper than the standard Melling oil pump, the HV unit pumps 25% more oil, but Im wondering if it may in fact over pressure the system in normal driving conditions?

Only use the standard pump.
A high volume oil pump can pump all of the oil to the top of the motor and basically empty out the oil pan before it can all drain back again. A high pressure pump can also wash your bearings if not modified.

Yeah i figured a HV pump in a standard motor wouldn't be a good thing but couldn't be sure.

If you have a standard pan and loose bearings a HV can definately run out of oil but only at high rpm which is kind of the wrong place to find that out. Cheap insurance if using HV pump is M.P. oil pump driveshaft pinned and hardened.

Yeah new pump drive and bushing will be a must as i am overhauling the motor, i ordered a new standard volume pump today. When it comes to oil delivery, water flow and proper timing chains, i believe these items are of utmost importance to longevity of the engine.

All cheap insurance at this piont, one piece valves are starting to become a standard replace item just because the originals are getting pretty old now.
