I've been curious on what everyone uses for O.D transmission in a 73 Dodge Monaco.. it is a big block car. Anyone find a good viable option without having to rebuild the whole car.. if my car was a usual no floor rust beast I'd chassis swap a SRT Charger.. but mines solid and would love to keep the 400 or a hopped up U code 440.

You can do a 518 or 46rh using an untrabell bell housing and you don’t have to cut the tunnel. You will need to modify the transmission mount but not much. I like this swap over the gear vendor because it looks more stock and you get a lockup converter which is good for 200 more RPM reduction. Plus if you ever need it work on it is a common transmission.

I put an A727A transmission in my '72 Polara Custom wagon some years ago. It was out of an '81 (I think!) New Yorker. They had the lock-up converter, and it significantly improved my highway fuel mileage. The case is identical, bolts right up to the 360. You'd have to change the bell for a big block. Only problem I encountered was the vacuum wouldn't be quite right around 60 because the RPMs were too low. Other than that, it was a fantastic upgrade.
