Anyone try putting a 518 overdrive in a 65 sportfury? I didnt know if floor pan mod's were required and it has a floor shifter mod's required? figured someone out there has done it. thanks for any help
I'm planning on doing it in the near future with my 67 NYer. I've done a few measurements to my transmission tunnel and it appears that a portion of it has to be raised to clear the larger 518 transmission housing. Some guys just lower the transmission with a drop mount but this throws it out of correct alignment with the drivetrain. These are the guys who sell the kit that will allow your transmission to shift properly. They sell 2 different versions, one with mechanical linkage that hooks up to your carb and the other is vacuum operated. It's a very simple setup.Depending on your engine you may need an adaptor plate that will bolt your engine to the A-518 OD transmission. You will also have to modify your transmission crossmember and some guys use a GM transmission truck mount from a 1990 Chevy Pickup, they just slightly enlarge the holes in the mount to get it to bolt up to the A518. Transmission yokes are the same as a stock 727 but you must shorten the driveshaft about 3 1/2 inches due to the longer A518 transmission.I've heard of guys having a little issue with having to modify floor shift linkage cars because the rods come into contact with the transmission, but column shift cars still can use the factory linkage. Here's the site that sells the transmission shift kit package.........http://www.transmissioncenter.net/SwapInformation.htm
