This guy did a not bad job on bringing his Olds back to life, and he didn't spray clear over the patina. You'll need to FF through some of it. There are before and after shots at the end.

I just watched that earlier tonight while I was eating dinner. I was quite surprised how effective the CLR was at removing the rust.

I had a chance to buy a 4 door hardtop version of that car for $750 about 15 years ago, and still regret passing it up.

The CLR dissolves/removes rust, the Scotchbrite he used helped and also scuffed the paint some. The polishes and such cleaned and sealed the finished product. To get those results, the base paint had to have been "un-compouned" in its past, so it was not too thin. Otherwise, primer would be bleeding through in some places.

BUT as porous as acrylic lacquer usually is, if the car isn't kept waxed well, that rust will come back through over time. The oils in the wax/polish will help keep it at bay, too. I'm surprised that it worked as well as it did.

might try it in select areas. Gettin' a bit thin on the hood though...
