Hello friends, I have a question about the rings that a chrysler 440 engine (newyorker 68) should have. The rings I have purchased have a difference in width of around 1mm. Ring #1 is less wide than ring #2 (image attached). The doubt arises, because the rings it has are both the same (#1 and #2). But the ones I buy, ring #1 is not the same as ring #2 (#2 is 1 millimeter wider). Does anyone have experience placing different rings?

Both diameters and thicknesses are exactly the same, the only difference is the width!

No one has responded, so I'll take a shot and assume you don't don't have the luxury of parts availability and local Mopar expert advice. So aftermarket rings can have a variety of differences than stock such as material and ring tension.

Most important to know if the rings will work at, is to make sure they are same thickness (vertically) and will fit in the grove, and that they are not wider than the piston grove depth. Fit a ring, outside ring edge to the piston ring grove and make sure there is not excessive vertical clearance, should be just a few thou of an inch. Then make sure the ring is well below the outside face of the piston, in other words it has sufficient back clearance. If so, they likely will work. It would also be nice to know what material the rings are made, chrome, cast iron, or moly faced to know what hone fineness to match.

By the way, the rings need to installed right side up, there is a chamfer on inside or sometimes a "pip" mark, small dot, to indicate the up side, hopefully there are instructions with the rings. After honing, before installing on pistons, pre-fit the rings in the cylinders, square up about an inch down in the bore and measure the ring end gaps. If too small a gap, remove ring and file to size.
