Hey guys my Mom fell sometime over the weekend & broke her hip, cracked a vertebrae & has two badly bruised knees & a severely bruised left wrist & hand. Also a nice bruise on her face & chin. She just came out of surgury. We think she may have been on the floor for several hours. 81 y/o & very independent.

About 4 years ago my 88 year old Mom went down her basement stairs breaking a couple ribs and sustaining a concussion. In her case it was tough convincing her there was no shame in using a walker even around the house. She made it through the ordeal and is now happily housed in a retirement home. Message is there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks everyone. We (nurses) finally got her to settle down. She's sleeping. She looks like she was drug out of the ruble of 911. Horrible bruises all over. Never seen anything like it. Almost think she got up & fell again

That is really a brutal fall. For sure you have my prayers. Caring for old folks is really difficult and finding a really good care facility makes all the difference in the world. My dad had osteoporosis pretty bad so any fall could have really messed him up, but after looking at 9 facilities, I found one that was definitely well above all the others and not much greater price. So I would recommend, if she is at all willing to face her reality, search out a good one. My dad was taken care of superbly and never had a fall, as the caregivers paid close attention to every move he made. He finally passed at 90 from natural causes. The Lord hears our prayers.

Our prayers are being sent for a speedy recovery and health for your mom. It will be a long recovery so be patient. If anyone here is interested in a safety fall risk care plan, please let me know. As a fellow "faller", if I had only followed the care plan that I give patients..I would not have had my own fall. Again, thoughts of love, compassion and best wishes for your mom.
