I rebuilt the carb on my '67 Newport w/ 383 WWC 2 barrel and seems to run fine for the most part but when I shut the car off it kind of runs or chugs twice after the key is turned off. Isn't this called "dieseling" or something like that?

How do I go about fixing it? Also my idle might be set a little higher than it needs to be, would that be related?

shoot, wrong thread, Sorry!!! can an admin move this?

First confirm that you can get a smooth idle at 650 rpm (a.c. off if equipped) in Neutral and a drop of a hundred or more when put into drive.

I can't help you then.

Having too high an idle speed will lead to dieseling. Make sure you have set the idle mixture screws to the point where RPM is highest at a given speed setting. Then adjust the speed to a proper idle level, around 700 RPM. If your mixture is too lean, and/or your speed setting is too high, dieseling will occur.

You can't fiddle with an engine without one.

I set the idle quite a bit lower and the problem has gone away so far. I put that analyzer on my shopping list. But while I'm at it, what would it take to install an aftermarket tach in my car? Any simple kits out there? I dont want anything fancy and would like it to look period correct.

A period correct Stewart-Warner is ungodly expensive.
A simple classic "look" tach like this one will still look great.
There are lower priced ones around. Just google classic tachometer.

Please, no 6" tachs with shift indicator lights. ugh...
