Project D440 update

so,its thursday,what happened w the truck?
get her fixed,what was it?
Dont know. Been tied up on other things. I'll check the trans mount & go from there. My buddy reminded me that it wasen't doing this before the suspension drop & drive shaft change. So now I'm wondering WTH ......

mount,crossmember,and tailshaft bushing.
please let us know how it turns out :)
I will. I had a broken mount in a mild drag car one time. It moved so much the fan hit the radiator & it didn't pop as loud as this truck does & im not even giving it but 1/3 throttle. Visual inspection the mount looks good but the pop sure sounds like it's comming from the tailshaft area.

it occurs to me,if you yank the driveshaft and stick it in another trans you have laying around....
you could check the wiggle factor on that yoke.
take like 10-15 mins tops.

View attachment 125669 View attachment 125669 Ok I finally got time to work with on the D440. Trying to find the source of the loud clunk sound. Trans mount is indeed new & was installed correctly. Oh well so the only thing that's not new is the front u joint. The reason I left the old front u joint in is I was unsure the new driveshaft was correct. So I greased the joint & that did seem to help. Even though the joint felt tight. Also there is a small amount of play or back lash in the pinion. Which is newly rebuilt. Decide to yard drive & the clunk is noticeably better. So drove the truck up to the local gas station (5 miles) & if I get on it from a slow speed it still clunks a bit. Deffinately better. Before I greased that front joint it sounded like something was about to come apart. Came back home. Crawled back under & the only place I can find any back lash at all is that rear pinion. It's barely noticeable. So went back out & just drove around kind slow to feel each time the trans shifts. On the 1-2 shift I can barely hear or feel anything. The 2-3 is smooth. So I've now put 10 miles on it. I guess I'll just drive it & see if it gets worse. I called my buddy I got the rear chunk from & he said everything in there is new except the sure grip unit. He said drive & see what happens. The truck has headers with turbo muffs dumping right under the cab so it's a little hard to hear a drive line noise & kinda going off the feel. So I'll drive it & see

If grease helped the u-joint... replace it, too cheap and too easy to fool around with.

I will just want to sort out a few other issues first. My Thermobog is bogging bad. I need to buy that air door tool. And it won't cold start. I think fuel bowl Is leaking down.

hey i've got a spead bore holley , d440 is looking good bob . hope you find the noise and its nothing big . i think your rear tires will last , as long as you don't drive it . my hot rod d383 , lol . the limited slip keeps the tires even in wear , lol . so to make them last i ride my bicycle , lol . i'm running some tall 285/70x15 on 15x8.5's rears with a 3.54 235/75x15 on 15x6's up front . rolls well .

the holley is a spread bore bolt right on , it the damm fuel damms in those temo's that leak fuel and vac . always had them built to cure there ills . reepoxy all the inner walls back sealed . then it would dial it .

two different spread bores 650cfm and an 800cfm . and whats up with that d200 shifter n cables in that last wreck'r pic . what to do some trad'n . let talk bob .

parts for sell to you ?
Oh yea he will sell it I'm sure. I don't have time to go out there. Hour away & very grown up paths. Too damn hot & humind & too many critters that bite. I saw a lot of stuff I wanted. Also we had walked WAY back out in there to look at that green Dodge wagon & a barking growling Doberman came up on us. We started walking slowly back to the front & it followed us a hundred yards. My buddy didn't know who's dog it was. We invaded its space
