My niece sent me a picture of the dog that I got for my Dad a few years before he died. Queenie (The 13th) is 8 years old now. You are probably wondering what the 13th is about...well I'm 59 and we've had a lot of German Shepard's since I was a kid. Every single one of them was named Queenie. My brother figured out through pictures and memory that this one was number 13.

Beautiful dog. GSD's have a special place in my heart having been raised with them in the house.

In 1964 my father was given his choice of a German Shepard puppy from a very big litter. At the time he was regional manager for Carnation in the Baltimore region and the owner asked if Carnation might be interested in using the dogs. No, but my father bestowed a lot of Friskies dog food and he was thanked by getting a puppy. Picked a female and named her Madchen which is German for girl. She was with us till age 13 in 1977 and had to be put down because of her hips. It was very traumatic, as it took three attempts to go to the vet, and since then I have never had another dog.

I hate the end game for all pets......they are man's best friend. It's a tough thing to deal with. I lost 2 cats a year ago. I had them both for 15 years and they had to be put down 6 months apart. I said no more pets. My friend's wife just got a dog from one of those kill facilities and she told me that they were over run with kittens and you know what the end game is for that. So I went to the place just to look and I ended up rescuing 2 kittens from the same litter. I looked at the dogs too and 99% of them were pit bulls that were very aggressive/biters so I couldn't do anything with them. My girlfriend has a very small poodle. I'll get another German Shepard puppy in 3 years when I retire for good.

That's a nice pic Bob, she's beautiful.

I have a dog that is by my side 24/7

He comes to work, goes into stores, and generally never leaves my side. He is a Cane Corso, or Italian Mastiff. THE dog to have if you have the space for a 200pound dog that looks like a Pit but acts like a Lab.

But there is always a problem with pups. They are only with us for a very short time. Blue, my blue nose pit, left us after 15 years of general retardation.
