I'm anticipating an exhaust manifold turning out a stud with the nut. I know there's a coolant passage behind it (right?), but my question is: does the level go down when the engines not running, like a radiator?

short answer is no. It will leak when you pull the stud out unless you drain the system to below that point before hand.

looking., the engine cooling system should be consistently full. Nowhere for it to go to. The only opening should be the overflow tube/ bottle.

Yep, got that. Even if I drain the system, it'll still be in the block. Ok, I guess I'll expect a mess. Thanks guys; maybe see you at IRM.

If you have a small vacuum pump, inserted into a stopper where the radiator cap goes, you may be able to sneak it out with minimal mess. Pulling a vacuum may help reduce the mess. Have your new one ready to go.

On either side of the block is an NTP pipe plug along the line of the "freeze" plugs. They're just behind the mounts. Unscrew plug, break the crud that's probably "sealing" that hole and you can drain the block to nearly dry. This can be a bit messy with a hole the size of your pinky gushing coolant, but a strategic bucket will get most of it.

This will eliminate the annoying weeping out of the exhaust stud hole every time you lean on the fender to do something.

Pic is a grab from the interweb. I'm not responsible for this ugly mess.

The head studs are above the lowest level of the water pump housing so it won’t leak if you drain the radiator.

G'Day,
Don't mean to teach my Gran Ma to Suck Eggs But,
Because of the Fact that the Stud goes into the Water Jacket be VERY Careful & Patient when Trying to Remove.
The End that is Exposed to the Water Rusts and can be Extremely Difficult.
I managed to Break off Two Studs Many Years ago when attempting to do a Similar Job.
Eventually had to Pull the Motor.
All the Best,
Regards Tony.M
