Picked up a blown up 5.7, 2004 Durango thought I would throw a used engine in it and flip it or run it into the ground and snatch back the engine for something else. Wow they are expensive for high mile, so more research, starting to find a lot of evidence about them dropping valve seats. My question is, is this common? why? what can be done to fix this permanently ? I am probably going to pull the heads and may have them on standby for a first gen metric Charger if this is a weak spot.

Its poor manufacturing quality. The seats arent inserted correctly and become loose when the engine an the alu material around them gets hot and expands. I dont see why this couldnt be fixed... it just needs to be done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Can't quite answer your question Bob but I personally can track it back to '87 in ah FI fed LeBaron GTS. And I'd personally think it's high milez rather then poor quality. No TSB'z on that issue az far'z I know. KA-KAH happenz. Go for it, Jer

I second the comments in post #2. Perhaps the factory seats don't have enough press in their fit to the aluminum casting to overcome the expansion/shrinkage cycles. Or perhaps the alloy of the seats isn't up to par to deal with this. or a combo of both. I'm sure you could find some good quality replacement seats.

The way to remove old seats is by taking a mig welder to them all around and they pop right out.

Right. I understand now. I would have thought you only needed high-temp for the exhaust side. Intake side gets cooled by vaporizing gasoline.

You can't believe everything you read on the Internet....
Should we put a disclaimer on these threads so when people do this it says don't try this at home...

The early 5.7 hemi heads up to the "eagle" head (2009 and later) have insufficient press with the intake seats. Usually run the engine hot from over heating and they fall out. Only way to fix is to remove the seat and install one with more press fit. Its common practice once rebuilding these heads or it should be at least. If you look around, the seats falling out and spinning the rod bearings is fairly common. The durangos they have a problem with the cowl under the windsheild leaking and going into the intake manifold and have an updated version.
