I see newports and other models with a squareish panel at the top center of the back seat....what determines if a car had that or a solid cushion? Trim? Model? I like it and would like it in mine but have no idea what to even look for.

Every convertible I've seen is the same as this picture. It's for the rear seat speaker. The other style is in hardtops with deck mounted speakers.

On the coupes and fast tops the fancier rear seat usually came with front bucket seats. The seat with the dip in the center was also usually paired with a special molded package tray.

I currently have the front seats in that picture...but my backseat does not have that panel. I have seen it in the 300 hardtops too though.

My '67 CE23 has the optional bucket seat interior (w/center cushion) option. Same seats as in the '67 300s, but with other interior Newport trim (door panels, IP ornamentation, etc.). It has the rear inset with "Newport" script in it. As mentioned, the rear speakers on coupes/sedans were mounted on the package tray support. Convertibles would have had their rear speaker behind that grille.

I also have a '68 LeSabre convertible. Same rear seat lean-back shape. It has a rear speaker behind the grille.

As others have said, this style of rear seat came with convertibles, and in hardtops if the bucket seats were ordered. In the hardtops, it came with a special molded rear package tray. As I found out the hard way when converting my rear seat, the seat with the dip requires different brackets to be welded into the car to attach the seatback. Also particular C-pillar chrome trim.
