I am in the process of prepping my magnum 500's for paint. my question is should the black paint be gloss or satin finish. mine are so faded i cant tell. can anyone reccommend a brand or type of paint.

I'd go with satin but use primer before paint. Sand to smooth any edges where paint is/is not

Since you are going to NAPA get the 7220 self etching primer. I always have a can on the shelf, great stuff. You can drip brake fluid or gasoline and that rattle can top coat will come right off, but that primer doesn't budge.

ok all paint stripped from 2 wheels .primed them with the napa self etching primer . i top coated them with Duplicolor satin black wheel paint i left them dry for like 5 hrs. i just started to unwrap one of them and the Duplicolor paint dried to a powder that did not stick to the primer i was able to just brush it off. what the hell happened here.

The two brands of paints must not be compatible.

Best thing is to stay with one brand and one line of paint. Ex: Use Duplicolor primer with Duplicolor paint.. NAPA with NAPA etc.

I am currently using Krylon and Rustoluem top coats both with great results. I am certain I have even used Duplicolor too. The NAPA self etching is the only primer I have used for years. Sorry you are having problems.

well i think i got a combination that will work. i used a scotch brite pad to get rid of any residue of the duplicolor paint off. cleaned everything up and remasked the wheels again ( like 1/2 hr each wheel) and used NAPA Chassis paint with two light coats then a medium last coat.Napa guy recommended the chassis paint as the gloss isn't that glossy. will let it dry till tues then remount them with the new lug nuts then move to other side of car. time is running out as car goes to body shop on monday for the new tailgate install. that will be the end of the rust repair. will post pics tomarrow before i mount the wheels. carlisle is fast approaching. hope i have enough time to get the air condtioning working before then. have a new drier to install then have sytem checked for leaks then have r-12 installed (have 4 cans) cant wait to get to carlisle.

i finally finished the refinish after the problem with the duplicolor paint turning to dust. i used 3 coats of NAPA self-etching primer followed by 3 coats of their chassis paint. i think they turned out great. used the stencils they sell on e-bay . car goes to body shop on tuesday for tailgate replacement. getting close to being done for carlisle.
