Resolved. New starter solenoid and.... car wasnt all the way in park ‍♂️

Hey all took my 69 fury 318 to a car show tried to start it a few days later it had full power but no cranks clicking etc.

- new battery
- new alternator
- all fuses are fine

The starter solenoid looked original so i swapped it with no changes when I accidentally touched a wrench to the bolt on the solenoid before unplugging the negative cable it cranked.

Any insight on the issue would be super appreciated. Thank you!

In the image above, I'd move that red wire with the large eyelet terminal on it to where it is at 3:00 o'clock position rather than at the 5:00 o'clock position.

Had a similar issue with my '67 Newport after I installed the old MP Electronic Ign kit. Ended up being a thin grunge between the battery cable insides and the battery posts. I could barely see it with the cable ends on the posts, but it was there. A good cleaning with a battery terminal wire brush fixed it. I tried a new solenoid, too.

I'll fix that right now(fixed), I'll check the rest of the connections

Have you checked the Neutral Safety Switch? I had a similar issue with my car lately. I still got it to start in Neutral but it was dead in Park.

Since you accidently jumped the starter relay by hitting it with a wrench, that means the starter, battery and cables are all good. That leaves the neutral safety switch, ignition switch and wiring from the ignition switch.

The most likely is the neutral safety switch and also the easiest to test. First.... Is the car in park or neutral?? You'd be surprised how many times that trips people up. Next try jiggling the shifter a little when turning the key. Try neutral and moving the shifter in and out of park. Finally, you pull the brown color wire running down to the trans. Then connect a jumper wire to the terminal that you just pulled the wire off of on the starter relay and connect the other end to a good ground or better yet, the negative terminal on the battery, Try the key then. If it starts, it's the neutral switch.

The ignition switch and associated wiring is the next suspect. You'll need a multimeter or test light. See the yellowish wire? Leave it in place, but hook your test light or meter to that and the other end of the light/meter to a good ground. Try the key again and see if there's power. If it doesn't show power, either the switch is bad or the wiring from it is. So, you do a visual check first and make sure the wiring running to the bulkhead connector looks good and is plugged in to the connector.

If you have power to the starter relay, you have a bad relay. New doesn't mean good anymore.

Then it's under the dash and checking for power at the ignition switch. But rather than type that all up, do those other checks first and get back to us.

We have a winner! It wasnt in park all the way.... Thank you for that idea, problem solved!
