WHY are they still doing derbys in the older cars? Because the GM cars were easily-bent long ago. WE see them for their classic value. Others see them as a means of entertainment, gladiator style, with inanimate objects.
Highly illegal to have "rooster" fights and dog fights, so why not demolition derby races too? Each of those vehicles has a spirit and soul, at least to some people. Somewhat reliable transportation to their prior owners/drivers, keeping them safe and warm for good times to come. And, in the case of the ambulance, helping save lives.
Considering the amount of safety equipment, body/chassis reinforcements with roll cages and such, these derbys might tend to have little or none of it. I would suspect a HANS device would be beneficial as impacts can come unexpectedly from several different directions in rapid succession.
Bad thing is that we can't save them all, even if they were interesting vehicles for one reason or another. In earlier times, "just cars" meant to be "used".
Value judgment . . . to let the cars go out in battle or sit hopeless as the crusher approaches?
