Selling Collection - Interesting Story

In 1968 when they were flying the fleet of German aircraft from Spain to England to film they had to get special permission from the foreign offices of the countries they flew over because the Nazi markings had all been painted on. Also the air fleet was in essence the fourth largest airforce in the world when it flew.

Opinions on the merits of various aircraft surprised me...

Well, it's not that surprising. The 109 was a great fighter, but only in the hands of a talented pilot. All of the highest-scoring German aces flew 109s. But it was unforgiving, hard to fly and required a certain flying-style to be successful, so novice pilots who didn't go through a proper training regime considered it a death trap.

This reminds me: http://www.irrawaddy.org/burma/hope-fades-burma-search-buried-spitfires.html
A shame, I was really hoping that they would find something...

Whats interesting is a friend of mine traveled to Thailand and was in contact with some of the big airforce brass there and he was able to get into a big hanger on some airbase outside of the capital, I dont remember the name of the city. But anyway the hanger was being used for storage of all the ex airforce aircraft and when they went in, there was about fifty aircraft stored in there all pushed tight together, including Spitfires and Bearcats and some others he mentioned too, from the pictures I saw I could see Bearcats in the background as well as MKXIV Griffon engined Spitfires in the foreground. He asked if any could be put up for sale. Nope government property and they were not to be sold. This was in about 2003 when I saw the pictures when he got back from his trip.
