Shoulder Belts

Seems like it was '68 or so, but there were some "concepts" (anchored to the rear seat area, I believe) in about '66? As an option that few people bought? The first years were separate and nestled along the roof rail when not in use (retained with a chrome wire clip). The ones in our '72 attached to the lap belt buckle as a slide-in peg, I believe, rather than having a separate buckle next to the lap belt buckle in the seat. The integrated "modern" belts were on the '74 re-designs, I believe.

In those earlier years of factory seat belts, it was a major luxury item to have the lap belt with a retractor. MUCH better than having them loose to lay outside of the door when it was closed!

1 January 1968 they became mandatory. The could be ordered prior to that for 68's with build dates prior to the mandatory date.

If you are wondering about a 70 Convertible, we had a discussion about them here: Fuselage 3 point rear seat belts.
Hi Big John
I was actually wondering about 65-66 fury 2-doors. I was thinking about one for my next project - not a 65-66 convertible. It doesn't sound like the shoulder belts were even an option then. I had a 69 Monaco with shoulder belts that attached behind the driver at the roof. When not in use, I slipped them over a clip and then buckled the front to an extension beside each visor for the front windshield. I just didn't know how far back they went as an option. Sounds like 1968 was the beginning, excepting some rare instance.

I did rear your thread regarding attaching the convertible shoulder belts beside the backseat. I agree, annoying for anyone in back. Wouldn't be too heard to reach if had the top down. Wasn't planning on shoulder belts. I just try to drive carefully.

Thanks again, you always have great info. Ben

Available as a Mopar accessory form at least 1964. I will look for a catalog photo. Kind of clunky looking item that attaches somewhere in the back seat area.

Where ever the shoulder belts attach, there will need to be some additional reinforcement to te area, plus the mounting flanges and such. Shoulder belts weren't on convertibles, only "closed" body styles.

When Chrysler (and later Buick) started using in-seat shoulder belts, I read that they had to reinforce the floor pan to handle the additional forces to keep the seat in place in an accident event.

No good to attach a belt anchor to a piece of sheet metal, where the anchor might get ripped-out by collision forces.

Seems like the maxwedge.com website I found might have the accessory prices in their price-guides? But maybe not on dealer-installed factory-approved accessories.

On the later models after 68 convertables depending on model could be ordered with a front shoulder belt. The belt was about 52 inches in length and attached to the rear outside lap belt mounting point which was reinforced.
