Trying to fire up a new purchase, mostly for the heck of it as I plan to rebuild soon but it would be nice to be able to move it under it's own power for the moment. After a few seconds of cranking I get wisps of smoke from the dipstick tube and the breather. Engine is trying to fire on gas trickled down the carb, but can't say it's really "caught" as yet. I've never seen this before, any ideas on the source/cause? 65 vintage 383 w/~102K miles, Carter BBD. Fuel tank is foul so have it plumbed to a can.

Too much blow bye, rings not sealing good.
Try a squirt of oil into each spark plug hole, they may start to reseat if they are run again... but doesn't matter much if you are just using as a build core.
