Went to the doctors todays afterwork, had some pain in my eyes, turns out I got welders flash from the weekend, First thing out of my mouth was "but I wore my helmet the whole time", doctor said it's very common and asked if I have a fixed shade helmet, which currently I do, he said that a lot of the cases he's seen where the guy was wearing a helmet they have been welding with a fixed shade, He told me he can give me drops to dull the pain, but only time will heal my eyes, he said give them between 24 & 72 hours and I should be good, he said to try and stay away from bright light and to keep sunglasses on as much as I can, he said when I get home to try and stay isolated in a dark room, he said if I do that I will have zero lasting problems.

of all things (and one of the reasons why I like my doctor), he told me to go home and cut a raw potato in half and place the cut halfs, cut side down over my eyelids and relax.

I know it sounds crazy, but I'll be a SOB if it doesn't work. My eyes feel 100% better, We'll see how they feel tomorrow.

I'm a welder by trade, and I have had arc flash a couple of times. Usually you get it when someone else is welding in the same area. I have never given myself flash burn before so I'm assuming you we're using too light of a shade lens. Minimum shade should be a ten, 12 when wire welding. Dip bread in warm milk and put on your eyes like the potatoes, it works! It usually goes away after a day.

I'm happy as hell we're talking about safety!!!! :yourock:

Bondo is safer in the short run. :laughing4:

OK, I'm stumped. Other than the pre WW II helmet, what's he doing wrong.

Off the top of my head he has on no sleeves and a cotton t shirt...

If I'm doing a few tacks, I don't bother with gloves and and a disposable long sleeve shirt.
Whatever t-shirt I'm wearing I have to consider throwing away, anyway. A dozen spark burns on the hands and arms I can handle, too.
Sometimes I don't wear a helmet. I position the tip, turn away and close my eys, and pull the trigger.

Judging by the plume of smoke that has made its way to the top of the pic I'm thinking he's doing a little more then a tack right there. More like working on his farmers tan! I'm doing 80' of custom steel handrail in my shop right now and granted its pretty chilly in my shop so I'm dressed for warmth but it don't take long to slip on the gloves in between turning on the gas and flicking the switch on the welder.

That's good, might even be warm enough for this never ending winter up here. Just took the dog out and it feels like the low teens out there with sideways snow flurries!

That was pretty funny.
