Anyone done one of these on the 66 New Yorker?

The speedometer started going haywire and bounching everywhere. The car is getting new wheels/tries and they attempted to lube the cable with graphite, no luck..

1. Where do you get your cables
2. Do you need to take the dash out on the New Yorker or can you access it by going upneath the dash and going behind?
3. Thanks!

It may not be the cable, it might be time to have the speedometer serviced.

You can replace the cable from under the dash, or at least somebody may be able to.

Thanks for the input. I can work on this provided I give myself time. This is my first mopar and classic car.

What does a speedometer service consist of?

Right now the needle is jumping/clicking.

Till I get it fixed is there any harm unplugging it behind the dash? I guess that is probably illegal so nevermind

My mechanic just lubricated the cable but it's still doing its bounce. This just stated Sunday before that it was fine.

99% of the time lubing the cable will cure the needle bounce, especially since it just started. You do have to remove the complete cable from the housing to fully lube it. Does your car have Auto Pilot? If it does disconnect the cable from the unit, if not disconnect it from the transmission. Then remove the lower dash cover, and you should be able to reach behind the speedo to disconnect the cable from the speedo. (Sometimes you need to drop the upper steering column). 1966 was the last year the cable was held to the speedo by a large nut like at the trans, Disconnect and lower from dash. I like to drop the cable into a container of oil to soak up, but put some oil in a squirt can and shoot it inside the housing. Reinstall the cable in the housing and clean up. DONE.

Try Imperial Motors up near Flint, Mi. They should have what you need in stock, Jer
Actually Steve(owner of Imperial Motors) is closer to Frankenmuth, Mi, not Flint but no one outside of Michigan haz ever heard of Frankenmuth. Phone # up there iz 989-652-6309 One other thing I'd do when you temporarily remove the speedo from the dash. Look closely at the threaded cable connection on the back of the speedo head. At the 12:00 position theirz a small indented hole with what lookz like cotton down in it. "2" drops of 3-in-1 in that cotton and It might just solve your needle dancing problem. NOT 3 DROPS BUT TWO. If you over fill that little hole of cotton the oil will "wick" forward out onto the speedo face. BTW, That's why theat little indented hole iz there in the 1st place, Jer

Jer, thanks a lot! I'm going to disconnect it tonight and look for that spot on the 12:00 spot. If that fixes it great! If not I'll be calling imperial motors for a speedometer cable. Thanks man!!!!!!!
