I did a search for starters, and if you can get through all the off-topic stuff about flying and trash talking, there seems to be consensus that the later 318 starter is the way to go for a 440.

Stan put up a link to this starter:

And some searching for a Dakota with 318 came up with an AC Delco 337 1094 at both Rock Auto and O'Reilley's.

Prices range from $75 for the DB Electrical to $100 at the auto parts stores.

Is this the right part?

I can't confirm the number but looks identicle to the 360 starter i put n my 440. It should be a bolt in although i had to remove the plastic extension. I used starter out of a 96 dodge ram w a 5.9. A 5.2 should be identicle.

I did not know you could do this, swap starters with other engines. My starter crapped out on me a month ago. I just went to O'Reillys told them I had a 68' 440ci and they had it in stock. My car sounds like a new car when it starts. Fires up a lot quicker too.

I wonder if they gave you the new part or the original part. A lot of the discussion I found talked about the different sound of the starters.

Starters, starters, and more starters. Yeah, lots of discussion/bickering about different starter motors to be found here that is for sure.
