Hello,

I have a 1970 Newport convertible. I am interested in knowing what steering columns can be used. Which years/models are direct swaps? Is it possible to install a tilt/telescoping column?

Thanks,
Paul

I am also interested in this topic; 69 Fury Convertible. I bought a 69 tilt/tele from a Chrysler New Yorker. It looks like it will be a direct bolt-in to me. The thing with 69, first year of fuselage, is this is only year with ignition in dash. I would think you'd be good with a 70-73 column, direct bolt-in.

Perhaps an expert or someone with personal experience will weigh-in for us.

If you are interested i have a 73 tilt/tele from a NY Brougham. I was going to use that and convert my car to locking column, tilt/tele/cruise but i just decided to stick with 69 model year stuff. Brown/tan steering wheel, would need full resto. From my daily driver back in '92 so i am confident it is a good column.

the column wiring harnesses are very different between the 69 and 70+ . you would need good schematics of both to figure out what is what.

Yes, thanks. For Rcktmn94's 1970 would the 73 column be an easy option?

i can't say about going that route but my gut tells me it would be easier. keep in mind there are several different turn signal switches,so you might have to mix and match there.

Just remember that a standard column has the ignition switch mounted internal in the column, while a tilt and tel. column has the ignition stitch mounted external on the column jacket. You will need the adapter plug to connect the switch to the wiring harness.

good info...thanx

Thanks for the replies ad good info. I figured that I would need a '70-up due to the ignition. I am adding cruise control to the car and figured I would look into doing the column swap as well, if not too difficult.
Fury1969WI - What would you be looking to get for that '73 column?

Does anyone know if the steering wheels are unique to the tilt/tele steering columns? Glenn B - you on here??

belive the tilt and telescopic need the steering wheel with the pad across the center...don't think a 3 spoke will work with tilt and telescopic....almost positive l read that somewhere but don't take it as gospel truth

Every Tilt & Tel steering wheel I have ever seen is different from a standard steering wheel.

Yes they are different the telescopic lock is attached right behind the wheel which is a different style than the three spoke. They are a pia to come by. I have three columns with only one wheel worth rebuilding.
