Hi guys what kind of power steering fluid do I need for my 87 150 dodge it doesn't tell me in the book that I have the fluid in it just now is red somebody mentioned ATF+4 would that be right:BangHead:

use power steerin fluid....some atf may eat all yer rubber parts in your brakeing system

Thanks I will go to my local car accssesory shop and see what they have great forum there's always some body here to help when your stuck:icon_thumright:

Use a modern steering fluid. It foams less and is able to handle more heat and is more
viscous in cold climates. On the down side, it's a bit lighter in weight and it's use can
result in minor leaks popping up. They're all hydraulic oils ( even trans fluid ) but the
additives distinguish their purpose. I highly recommend a small hidden cooler installed
on the return line to the pump like newer cars to extend the life of the pump and
gearbox seals. Cheap and they work well in lowering fluid temps.

Page 13. ATF will cause hose deterioration.

I know 1988 and up used ATF, but I've read this other places that Chrysler said not to use ATF in cars newer than 1960 ish to the late 80's.

From personal experience, every pump that I've encountered that failed (not many) or leaked like a sieve (quite a few) had ATF in it.

I have nothing to add concerning power steering fluid, but I gotta say your picture of the girl and the white shepherd is quite adorable.

Welcome to the free clinic. . .

NO ATF. Regular clear power steering fluid.

You can go to AAP and they have a quick button on their parts lookup screen that will tell you every fluid that goes into your vehicle and it tells you the capacity also. If the counter guy is squared away.... he can push another button and print the entire list on one piece of paper for you if you ask for the list. If he says he can't do it.....ask for the Manager on duty........one of them knows how to print the list.

You can drain it and just flush it with the right power steering fluid until it comes out clear. AAP should have a gallon container of power steering fluid that they sell to the commercial guys. Disconnect the return hose and run it in a bucket until it's clear.
