I picked up some real paint in AZ and got to hit the HEMI show in Phoenix to boot. The painting went pretty smooth. I just followed everyone's wisdom and the results are mostly perfect. It's no woodgrain or recall wheel but dang it it's straight with no cracks. I also fixed the horn and turn indicator. Some chimp broke it off while it was parked on the street. Dave was smart enough to throw it in the glovebox so it could be reattached sometime down the road. I reused my center pad as it was ok and good to go. Here are the pics thanks again everyone for all the words of wisdom. Did it all for under a hundred bucks !!!

That's my partner in crime enjoying the show. There's that recall wheel haunting me. I guess it's ok cause it's sitting in a 67 hemi 4spd GTX convertible. Wow what a car.

Here is the wheel I bought. No cracks and arrow straight. The dings are ok compared to what I started off with.

You can see how bent and damaged the original wheel was with the center off. It was shattered and bent from a past fender bender.

The side by side shows the night and day difference.

Here's the only paint photo I shot. Caution don't hang parts to dry next to where the boss is drying her laundry. The dryer lint sticks to wet paint like a madman. Just sayin...

Also I only used warm water and this crazy Mr clean sponge thing to clean the nastiness off the wheel I bought. Not sure what it's made out of but it really is magic. Worked like it was soaked in carb cleaner.

Install was straight forward and god bless mother for clocking the wheel tines. Sure makes lining it all back up a breeze.

Fixed the horn and replaced the turn indicator bolt broke off by some punk vandal. Never realized they say right and left when lit up in the dash. Seemed kind of funny to me.

Also funny was this guys ride. Saw it picking up the oddball bolt to fix the indicator. The self cancel works perfectly by the way.

That's it all done and ready for summer.

HEY GREAT JOB ON THE WHEEL!!! it took me 32 years to have a steering wheel restored and it’s not the original one. Your learning by doing, I have a great deal of respect for anyone that works on there own car. You feel that smile on your face it’s called pride.

Hey what’s that caution decal below your radio. I’ve never seen that before. What does it say ? did it come with the car ? Can you post a picture of it ?

Thanks man. It sure was nice to drive it with a real wheel and not a buzz saw. And that crazy cool wheel of yours.... weesh man !!! Gives me something to shoot for. Probably never stumble across one of those but a woodgrain, I bet I'll find one so long as the price is right.

It's one of those 1960's joke deals. It's a pot metal sticker that says. Caution Don't lower windows at speeds in excess of 120 mph. I've had it over 20 years and the font matches the dash so....

Just keep your eyes open at swap meets and such you may get lucky. The poorer the shape the cheaper the wheel cost . it costs the same to restore . I found mine well before the internet pushed the cost mopar car parts though the roof.

Yep. You're right about that. I was in on the OEM air cleaner gold rush. But I missed the boat on steering wheels. Who would've guessed.

Anyway I have all the time in the world to search now that mines nice to handle. You ever seen one with the center bashed like that. Must've broke the poor guys arms. Pretty scary.

I have a few of those wheels and I’ve never seen one that badly broken .

So this whole time my wife's been sanding our house away little by little...

I tell you what though that critter works. She took one look at all the toe jam on the new wheel and said two things;

Use this & warm water.

Do it OUTSIDE.

It's also use as heat insulation, pipe insulation, and sound deading

Is that the base? I didn't realize that they are slightly abrasive. I have used them on occasion and never noticed any wear. The active ingredient is formaldehyde. Always wear gloves. And use in a well ventilated area. Great job on the wheel! Looks good and you can feel it too.

Also is the new one just an inch or two smaller than the original? Sometimes A/C cars had larger wheels. At least this has been my finding, does anyone know the rhyme or reason to that?
