I got a call from a guy that works a D & D Classic, a auto restoration company near me, there is a class scheduled for the end of April. I have been on two tours of this facility, they do outstanding work. I am fascinated by the metal shaping guys.

It is an 8-5 one day class. Subjects covered will be the English wheel, power hammer, sand bag and mallet, shrink/stretch metal, hammerforming, pattern development, station bucks, annealing metal. It is a hands on class and looking forward to it.

I wish I could be there with you Mike, it's fascinating to me too. I'm sure you'll let us know how it goes, seems like an awful lot of stuff to cover in a day!

I'll take a lot of photos. It will be a long full day, I have been waiting about a year for them to have another class. There is an employee who fabricated a one off body for his personal car. I'm hoping it will be there. The last tour my camera died and I never got a picture of it.

I have plans that day but would seriously consider changing them if you wouldn't mind me tagging along.

Metal meets are coming up soon. Gator meet in mid MD is first this year in early May. NC has a meet coming up in June. And then the big meet in Oblong IL is coming later I the year. Also should be one at EMMR in PA this summer. Never been to one yet but for $100 for the week and learn for the best metal shapers in the industry there is I don't think you can beat it. None in NE but Wray Schillen runs a school for 300 for three days up here.
Santana Cruz meet is also later this year.

Lemme know if you want more information, anyone.

That would be fun I am certain there are still openings. It is about an hour drive from my house. Meet me here and I'll drive the rest of the way. I am a mile and half off 70.

That would be a kick in the pants! Wish I could find a similar class around here.

Almost like a ski trip for Mike and Ross...

I always wanted to do something like that myself.

Gene Winfield did a class here last year and I thought about it, but getting the time free wasn't in the cards.

Problem is you should have the possibility to regularly work with these tools otherwise you don't get practice and the basic knowledge quickly gets lost, and who has an English wheel at home for example. At least that's how I felt. Some more basic metal bending I did more or less all the time got a bit enhanced.

I took my metal shaping class last Saturday. It was very cool but it totally messed up my routine, I didn't get to work on Goldie at all last weekend and feel like it has been a month since I have been on the forum, but it has been a week. I really like the first half of the class. I am mostly interested in what I can do with hand tools, and was happy with the results that I could achieve with just a little bit of instruction.

The first is total hand tools. The second is hand tools except the crease which I screwed up with a machine, but was happy with the shaping of the curve around a steel rod. The last is total machine which was fun but nothing I would be interested in doing in the future.

I feel total confident that can make my own metal shaping repairs now. Metal shaping2.sm.jpg

That is awesome. I'm pissed that I didn't go. I was supposed to work on Imp since it runs like **** but my buddy flaked at the last minute.

I need to take the next class though cuz my red Imp needs it badly.

You made the first picture with hand tools? How do you get the curve/ shinking without distorting the top surface? I always end up bending up the big flat surface.

If you notice on that one it has two holes. A wood jig was made first, screwed the metal to the jig and then the whole thing placed in a vice. The second one was done totally by hand no jig.

You missed a fun day Ross. There was a lot of one on one attention only 6 other guys in the class.
