I sure hope the Pentagon/Congress doesn't ax the A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog). In my opinion it is the most lethal close air support us guys on the ground have when the **** is hitting the fan. Anyone that has been on the battlefield and needed A-10 support will agree with me on how important these birds are to us. They are fearless and will take a beating to support us on the ground. Getting rid of the A-10 fleet to meet budget cuts is piss poor management by the pussies that will never be on the battlefield to understand how important the A-10 really is. Watch the video to see the A-10 work out....

Serious ground attack support from the air. Never served in the military. If I was a ground-pounder and needed some close support this bird would be near the top of the list. Maybe a Cobra attack copter.

Hope this doesn't become the boondoggle that came when it was decided that jets would no longer need cannon/machine guns because they'd attack at a distance with missles. Wrong! See M61 gun pod.

Face it when A Major General threatens soldiers going before congress to testify about their experiences with treason if they show support for the A10, the barbie plane is coming to replace the A10.

new barbie plane looks nowhere near as cool as the A10 not to mention it doesn't really fly.

I'm all for the A-10. The Air force has always had these haughty attitudes about slow flying ground support aircraft. I can't believe these guys can say with a straight face that the F-35 will do a better job as a replacement. And how much does an f-35 cost? It isn't even a very good airplane. And that Barbie plane is a joke. They are nuts!
Higher and faster, with ever more expensive aircraft..

The vast majority of AF guys I know support the A-10. It's senior flag officers, corporations and politicians with agendas that are trying hard to push the F-35. Which for the money, cost the same for one as nearly the whole A-10 fleet did when they were purchased. Do you think the F-35 has longevity? I do not. Unfortunately, politics rules the day. Common sense is never part of the equation.

Patrick66 is right. Lose one f-35,and how long does it take to get another? The Russians are laughing. They out produced the Germans, with average equipment, and the result was predictable. Ever since the AF was created, the top level people didn't think much about ground support. That was an Army job. The AF hated the A-1 "sandy" back during Vietnam, but the ground forces were very grateful. That airplane could carry 8,000 lbs, fly low and destroy formations, ,take a beating, and go home. The AF sent up (mismatched aircraft to mission) F-105's fighter/Bombers to the north, and lost 63% of them in combat. F-4's couldn't defend themselves because the top brass saw no need for Guns, they lost a lot of F-4's. Somehow somebody got their heads out of their butts and designed the F-15. I love that plane.

True, the F-15 was new when the 69 roadrunner came out. But, the F-22 outperforms any Russian plane, as well as the Human flying it.

Actually, the F-15 came out in 1978, and was fully deployed in 1982.

I remember as a young airman, seeing the F-4 Phantom II's in Alaska and the F-106s at McChord AFB, WA in 1980. They were replaced in 1980 - 1982 by F-15s then. Were F-15s "new" in 1969, you'd have seen them in Vietnam. Which of course, they were not ever there, because they did not exist yet.

They were there, as when in Oct 70' at Sheppard AFB a staged F-15 was in the hangar, and Mechanics were being trained to work on it. It was chosen in in 67'. I was in Helicopters,(43130B) and really wanted to work on the new Fighter. and I remember sitting at a squadron commanders call in Minot AFB showing the F-15 flying, and setting a climb rate record not ever seen(.JUly 1972) It joined the fleet in 76'.
